Description

Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a Student Recreation & Wellness Coordinator position at the Walla Walla campus.

General Description: 

The Student Recreation & Wellness Coordinator is responsible for planning, overseeing, and directing the operations, services, staff, and activities of the Student Recreation and Wellness program, including the operations of the Student Recreation Center and development of indoor and outdoor recreational activities. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the Student Recreation Center in addition to supporting co-curricular learning at Walla Walla Community College. 
  • Develops and enforces policies, procedures and standards, including those related to safety and cleaning protocols. 
  • Receives and responds to questions and concerns from Recreation Center patrons; identifies issues and resolves problems or refers to supervisor as appropriate. 
  • Supports the Student Life Department and actively partners with HPER instructors and other Student Recreation Center employees to explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in recreational activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment. 
  • Oversees and schedules regular maintenance and cleaning of the Student Recreation Center equipment and space. 
  • Supervises student employees and part-time hourly staff, including hiring, training, payroll and scheduling in compliance with established procedures.
  • Plans, designs, promotes, and leads indoor and outdoor recreational and wellness activities.
  • Assesses, maintains, and purchases necessary equipment and supplies through prescribed processes.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of intramural and club sports.
  • Works collaboratively with Human Resources to support employee recreation and wellness opportunities.
  • Participates in professional development to stay informed of current trends and issues in student recreation and wellness, including participation in college, community, and professional associations.

  • Ability to follow standard procedures to gather information and to identify problems and their appropriate solutions.
  • Possess strong knowledge of recreation and fitness program activity and industry best practices.
  • Possess knowledge of trends and best practices in fitness programming and equipment upkeep and maintenance.
  • Demonstrate an ability to teach a variety of group exercises and activities.

Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (recreation, fitness, physical education, student development) is required or equivalent experience may substitute for bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working in the fitness industry, preferably in a higher education environment.
  • Current First Aid, CPR, AED Certification or ability to be certified within 30 days of hire is also required. 
  • The ideal candidate has a Personal Training Certificate or other Fitness Certifications. 

Equivalent education/experience may substitute at the discretion of the college.

Conditions/Terms of Employment

This is a full-time exempt position. Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment. Official college transcripts required at time of hire. Candidates may be subject to a criminal history background check as a condition of employment. Information from the background check may not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position. The college is a tobacco free institution.

Position will require the ability to work in a loud and fast-paced Recreation Center environment. Some sitting while completing administrative work. Considerable time walking and on feet. Ability to lift 50 lbs. This contract position work schedule will typically be Monday through Friday 8-hours each day. During the summer, work schedule is Monday through Thursday 10-hours each day. Schedule may include some evenings and weekends; some flexibility may be needed based on hours of operation. Occasional travel including overnight trips.  

Compensation: Annual salary range$52,000 - $55,000. The college has an excellent benefit program including paid sick leave; paid vacation leave; medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; retirement and two optional deferred compensation programs.  All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). All administrative exempt staff set aside 1% of their gross salary in a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) (VEBA). All exempt employees are required to participate in this program. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.

  • Dental Coverage - Walla Walla Community college provides dental coverage at no monthly premium cost to the employee.
  • Vision Coverage - Employees do not pay a separate premium for vision coverage; it is covered under the medical plan. Optical service frequency and hardware (glasses, contact lenses, etc.) vary depending on type of plan selected.
Eligibility
Permanent, seasonal and part-time employees as determined by WAC 182-12-114. Benefits also cover spouse or State-Registered Domestic Partner (SRDP), and qualifying dependents.
 
Effective date of coverage
First day of the month following your date of employment. If the date of employment is the first working day of the month, coverage begins on that date.

Employees pay their portion of medical care costs through payroll deduction. The employee premium is based on the choice of plan and elected coverage for spouse or SRDP, and dependent children.

The FSA and DCAP plans are optional plans offered by the College and the State of Washington. They are calendar year, pre-tax, spending programs you can use to set aside money for eligible expenses. Both plans are offered as payroll deductions and are administered by Navia Benefit Solutions.

RETIREMENT OPTIONS 

Eligible employees participate in a Washington state-sponsored retirement plan through one of two administrators: the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) or the Teachers Insurance & Annuity Association (TIAA). DRS administers the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) and the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) plans. TIAA administers the State Board Retirement Plan (SBRP).
*Retirement plan options are determined by employee type and prior history in DRS-administered plans (PERS or TRS). Participation in a retirement plan is required.

Vacation leave accrues at the rate of 14.67 hours per month (22 days per year) and sick leave accrues at the rate of one (1) day per month.

REDUCED TUITION WAIVER PROGRAM
Employees can take most credit and non-credit classes at a reduced cost when space is available and certain conditions are met.
 
Credit classes
Permanent classified, faculty, adjunct faculty and administrative employees of WWCC may take almost any credit class on a space-available basis if requirements and prerequisites have been met. The basic cost is $5.00, plus any fees associated with that class. Hourly and probationary employees are not eligible for this reduced tuition
