Position Summary

The instructor is responsible for the planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. The instructor is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Northwest-Shoals Community College campus as assigned. As a minimum, the related activities include instruction, academic advising, serving on various committees, participating in local, state, regional, or national professional activities and/or organizations. An instructor may be asked to perform other related duties as directed by the Division Chair, Department Head, appropriate dean level supervisor, or the President.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

At a minimum, the essential functions of the instructor are:

  • to manage and oversee the operation of the NW-SCC Child Development Instructional Programs; 
  • to establish policies and goals for the Child Development Centers and Instructional Programs; 
  • to direct and assist the Child Development student teachers in carrying out assigned activities at on campus and off campus childcare facilities; 
  • to approve all purchases of equipment and materials for the Child Development Instructional Program and oversee the CHD instructional budget; 
  • to screen and interview prospective Child Development adjunct faculty for employment recommendation to the Dean of Academic Affairs;
  • to develop semester class schedules for CHD courses and assign CHD courses to instructors; 
  • to work with the Director of Child Development Center Programs in setting and implementation of all policies, goals and the philosophy of the NW-SCC Child Development Programs; 
  • responsible for assisting in NAEYC accreditation for the Child Development Center;
  • to plan, organize, and instruct courses via in-person and/or virtual instruction using the College’s learning management system and, as appropriate, distance education tools and software;
  • to conduct class evaluations and complete other college evaluations in accordance with college policy;
  • to keep students informed about their progress through the prompt grading and posting of daily assignments, lab assignments, quizzed, and/or exams in the College’s learning management system;
  • to plan each unit or lesson, as to content, method, and organization to make each class period meaningful;
  • to ensure that assigned classes are held as scheduled; 
  • to teach all classes according to an approved syllabus; to keep students informed concerning course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements;
  • to hold final exams at the time scheduled in the College’s semester schedule unless permission to deviate has been approved by the Division Chairperson and appropriate dean level supervisor;
  • to recommend textbooks, instructional materials, and on-line theory and lab curriculum, including classroom and laboratory equipment and/or trainers, to the Division Chair, Department Head, or appropriate Dean Level Supervisor;
  • to accommodate differing student learning styles in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the College’s established ADA program;
  • to participate consistently in professional development related to his/her field and current trends for in-person, on-line, and hybrid instruction utilizing the College’s Distance Education Office and Instructional Designer;
  • to serve as an academic advisor to assigned students;
  • to refer students to Student Services departments, as needed;
  • to work closely with his/her division chair on the development of annual division budgets for approval by the deal level supervisor;
  • to assist with registration;
  • to post and maintain office hours for student consultations;
  • to participate in program and curriculum review and development;
  • to actively promote the instructional program through recruitment, retention, success, and completion initiatives;
  • to assist the Office of Strategic Partnerships in establishing an apprenticeship for CTE and other applicable instructional programs;
  • to submit required reports to the appropriate administrative personnel;
  • to attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as required by the President, dean level supervisor, or division chair;
  • to become familiar with and comply with college policies and procedures;
  • to serve on and provide information to college committees as needed;
  • to convey college-related information to students in a timely manner as requested by college officials; 
  • to maintain accurate and complete scholastic records.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education, required.
  • Experience working in a child development/child care setting, required.
  • A minimum of 1-year experience working with dual enrollment students, preferred.
  • Experience in multimedia presentations, LMS including Blackboard and Banner, preferred.

Compensation is in accordance with the Alabama Community College System's Salary Schedule D1 ($44,780 - $87,562 for 9 month appointment). An additional summer appointment may be available.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions.  Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control.   The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA.  The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy.  The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
