NATURE OF THE POSITION

Under the supervision of the Maintenance, Custodial and Grounds Supervisor, the Maintenance/Groundskeeper I performs cleaning and minor maintenance work in the school buildings and ground keeping services. The employee is responsible for the use of proper methods, materials and equipment in performing these duties. This is moderately heavy work in providing maintenance and grounds keeping services in the maintenance of facilities and grounds.

Examples of Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Keeps outside of buildings and concrete sidewalks clean and painted as needed.
  2. Strips and waxes floors in classrooms and other facilities on and off campus.
  3. Assembles and dissembles new furniture including tagging new items.
  4. Keep all campus equipment in top working condition and maintain records on all equipment.
  5. Attend training out of town as required.
  6. Set up and arrange furniture and facilities as needed.
  7. Make semi-skilled maintenance repair of buildings, fixtures, furniture, and equipment.
  8. Plants, cultivates, prunes, trims, waters, fertilizes, and sprays trees, shrubs, hedges.
  9. Plants, fertilizes, waters, and cares for lawns.
  10. Operates power mowers, edgers, trimmers, and other grounds maintenance equipment/tools.
  11. Duties include occasional heavy lifting and working on ladders on scaffolding when washing windows, ceilings, painting, trimming trees, or when performing other work involving height.
  12. Deliver supplies and run errands.
  13. Assist in filling out paperwork and forms.
  14. Assists in setting up and maintaining the irrigation system.
  15. Assist with shipping and receiving of college products and materials.

  17. Cover in the absence of the janitor/custodian(s).

ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES 

  1. Maintains all buildings in proper sanitary condition and protects school property from loss, damage, defacement, and vandalism.
  1. Is on the alert for leaky faucets and gas valves, defective locks, and all such conditions which cause loss or create hazards, and reports such defects to the supervisor if he cannot correct.
  2. Performs all necessary maintenance and grounds keeping services prescribed, as well as moving of supplies, equipment, and furniture in as efficient and uniform a manner as possible in accordance with approved working schedule.
  3. Maintains friendly relationships with staff, instructors, students, and the general public and is obliging and helpful in every way in consistent with duties and the working schedule.
  4. Reports to the supervisor any violation of college rules, regulations, or laws.
  5. Exercises economy in the use of supplies and utility services.
  6. Secures and locks all buildings as prescribed.

Educational/Experience Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  1. Knowledge of requirements for maintaining college buildings and ground in a clean and orderly condition.
  1. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  2. Knowledge of materials, methods, and equipment used in groundskeeper work.
  3. Capability of keeping records of ground equipment and cleaning materials utilized.
  4. Possession of skills and physical strength, and ability to operate, push, self-propelled and riding type mowers, electric and gas type trimmers.
  5. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to ground and cleaning equipment and to recognize mechanical failures.
  6. Capability of operating heating and ventilating equipment.
  1. Ability to withstand exposure to variable weather conditions.

  1. Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels).
  2. Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, and walk.
  3. Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps, and ladders.
  4. Able to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and 90 pounds occasionally.
  5. Able to carry up to 60 pounds frequently, and 90 pounds occasionally.
  6. Able to push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds.
  7. Able to exhibit full range of motion for back lateral flexion.
  8. Able to work in restricted spaces in a safe and effective manner.
  9. Able to work with chemical agents in a safe and effective manner without allergic reaction.
  10. Able to work with trees, plants, shrubs, flowers, soil, and turf without allergic reaction.
  11. Demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to perform fine maintenance procedures and operate both manual and power hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
  12. Able to operate a variety of powered and manual equipment commonly found in janitorial and custodial services in a safe and effective manner.
  13. Able to operate a variety of powered industrial vehicles and equipment as commonly found in the grounds keeping and gardening trades in a safe and effective manner.
  14. Able to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and effective manner.
  15. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

CLASSIFICATION/SALARY

  1. This is a temporary on-call substitute position.  May include evening and weekend duty.
  2. Row 3 on the classified salary schedule.
