Position Summary

The Director of Student Development provides professional and administrative management to the operations of the Dean of Student Service’s office. The Director participates directly in the development and implementation of ADA Programs, Testing, Advising, and Retention. Additionally, the Director coordinates with other departments at the College to enhance retention efforts at Coastal Alabama.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:

 

  1. Manages and oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit including, but not limited to: 1) Ensuring pre-admission advising and program planning advising; 2) Ensuring compliance with policies and regulations; 3) Overseeing the Advising Office to ensure that advisors are available to assist students; 4) Overseeing the accurate dissemination of college transfer credit information; Assisting with administration of assessment instruments in an effort to enhance academic placement, career development, and personal enhancement; 5) Collaborates with Instructional Services Division on activities of the Academic Advising staff to ensure that the division assists students in making decisions that affect their educational, occupational, social, and personal lives; and 6) Oversees the operations of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) procedural program and staff to provide comprehensive current information and materials to faculty, staff, and students regarding the ADA and to ensure compliance.
  2. Oversees the continued operation of The Success Center, a learning laboratory that provides a variety of academic support services, computer-based tutorials, and career development/job placement information on behalf of the Dean of Student Services.
  3. Promotes the furtherance of activities of the Job Placement Office that serves as a liaison between "the student" and "the employer."
  4. Develops and establishes policies and objectives consistent with those of the division to ensure efficient operation of the department. Evaluates and recommends improvements for policies, procedures, educational opportunities for college programs and events.
  5. Represents the Dean of Student Services Office on committees and in general to the campus community; participates in professional associations and seminars, as appropriate.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

 

  1. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  2. Five (5) years of recent relevant experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  3. Three (3) years supervisory experience in one or more of the essential functions of the position.
  4. Experience in budget, planning, and data management.
  5. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. 
  6. Effective oral and written communication skills. 
  7. Ability to work well with others and work under pressure.


Preferred Qualifications

 

  1. Two (2) or more years of higher education administrative leadership experience.
  2. Experience with student disciplinary procedures.

 Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions.  Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control.   The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA.  The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. For more information visit The Retirement Systems of Alabama. All regular full-time and part-time employees (non-temporary and non- student) who work at least 20 hours per week are required to participate in The Teachers' Retirement System of Alabama.

Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy.  The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.  

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
  • 2/3 waived after 2nd year
  • 3/3 waived after 3rd year
