Job Summary

Under general supervision, this individual will teach courses designed for transfer and in support of career technical programs to include all business courses and Principles of Microeconomics and Principles of Macroeconomics.  The ideal candidate should be prepared to integrate technology skills into the classroom, be available to teach at times and locations that meet the needs of students, and be committed to working constructively with all facets of our programs within a community college setting.  Candidate must have a general understanding and be able to communicate ideas and theories in orthodox and nonorthodox schools of economics as well as management, marketing, human resources, and general business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching
Prepare and teach departmental courses to include:

  • developing learner centered lesson plans and creating and modeling a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population
  • employing teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles
  • incorporating, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments
  • preparing, distributing and utilizing instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate
  • develop appropriate course goals and objective along with evaluation methods that accurately measure student learning
  • input all required information into an online Learning Management System in a timely manner to include but not limited to grades, attendance, notes and assignments
  • accurately complete and submit all required reports and student records by stated deadlines and return all college materials
Professional Development
Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by: 
  • participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in field; maintaining current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation
  • participating in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies
  • making presentations to outside agencies as a representative of the College
  • attending all required faculty division or departmental meetings
  • serving on standing and ad hoc college committees
Student Support and Advising
Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:
  • promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success
  • ensures availability for all students by maintaining established student support hours, offering availability by appointment, and responding to electronic communication appropriately and promptly
  • referring students to campus and community resources when appropriate
Demonstrate and model the College's mission, vision, and core values of diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience Requirements

The Instructor shall possess an understanding of and commitment to the nature and role of the Community College, particularly its open access policy.  He/she shall have demonstrated personal and professional competence for the responsibilities assigned.  The Instructor must be able to: 

  • Multi-task

  • Create and maintain a learner centered environment
  • Communicate effectively
  • Ability to effectively implement and apply technology solutions
  • Ability to add real-world context to theoretical discussions

Education and Experience Required:
  • (1) Master's Degree in Economics from a regionally accredited institution that includes at least 18 graduate hours in Economics and 18 hours of Business Administration   and/or    (2) Master's Degree in Business Administration with 18 graduate hours in Business Administration and 18 hours in Economics
  • Post-secondary teaching and/or professional training experience in any of the following formats:  teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars
Education and Experience Preferred: 
  • Doctoral degree in Economics and/or Business from a regionally accredited institution
  • Post-secondary teaching experience
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems

Additional Information

Surroundings/Environment:
Standard classroom environment, usually indoors, away from elements, with moderate noise.

Physical Effort:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain a stationary position for an extended period; move about the classroom, operate and position computers, as needed; and frequently communicate with students.  The employee may occasionally move up to 25 pounds.

Scheduling:
This is a full time position.  Classes meet during the day and/or evening at the Statesville Campus, Mooresville Campus and/or our Early College campuses.  Classes also taught online.

Travel: 
Local travel is required, including between campus locations.
