General Information & Responsibilities

The Lead Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, and painting maintenance. The Lead Maintenance Mechanic is the responsible Operator-in-Charge of the Public Water Supply (PWS) for Black Hawk College East Campus and assists in the operation and maintenance of waste water treatment.

Description of Duties

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:  

a.    Obtains general instructions from Facilities Superintendent and proceeds with work assignments under minimal or no supervision. Proceeds with daily duties in absence of the Facilities Superintendent.

b.    Daily readings and maintaining equipment related to the PWS function; monitors/orders/ cylinders Sodium hypochlorite tanks Levels; ensures all EPA requirements are met

c.    Maintains all readings/records for the water bill for Prairie Point Apartments.

d.    Serves as the lead maintenance worker; responsible for performing and enforcing maintenance work within established written and practiced operating procedures; provides feedback to the Superintendent and directs facilities staff and student workers assigned to maintenance tasks.

e.    Responsible for routine and scheduled preventative maintenance assignments that include but are not limited to the following:  boilers, chiller, air handling equipment, pumps, fans, motors, lighting, furniture repairs, plumbing, etc.

f.    Responsible for major repairs of equipment as needed.

g.    Maintains and installs electrical systems using 120 to 440 circuits.

h.    Keeps close watch on mechanical equipment in all areas of the shift and makes repairs as required.

i.    Performs miscellaneous building maintenance assignments on the interior and exterior of buildings as directed

.j.    Completes written logs regarding maintenance and repair for all areas of work.

k.    Maintains, safeguards, and keeps a neat and orderly tool, stockroom, and work area.

l.    Prepares written reports regarding any unusual sights or happenings observed during the shift which may affect the safety of people, buildings, and/or their contents, and for any other irregularities which may affect the operation of the physical plant.

m.    Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the waste water treatment plant.

n.    Responsible for following all federal, state, local, and departmental safety regulations.

o.    Assist with snow removal and grounds as needed. 

p.    Attends required trainings as needed.

q.    Maintains satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

DESCRIPTION OF OTHER DUTIES:  

a.    Responsible for complete understanding of the operation of the energy management computer system and interprets logs and signals into understandable maintenance assignments; maintains and installs new controllers; reprograms, troubleshoots and diagnoses problems within the system; responsible for day-to-day maintenance of the server; orders, stocks, and replaces any necessary component(s).

b.    Follows and enforces procedures for the protection of College property and employees.

c.    Performs other duties as assigned.

a.    Works directly with the Facilities Superintendent.

b.    Works cooperatively with all facilities staff to ensure assignments are coordinated and implementation of the total program may be accomplished.

c.    Works cooperatively with the Certified Operator of the waste water treatment plant and Public Water.

d.    Works cooperatively with outside agencies, contracts, and vendors.

Education & Experience

(To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.)

a.    High School diploma or recognized equivalent required. Completion of courses in electrical or mechanical technology, community college and/or trade school background preferred.

b.    Building maintenance experience or background is required with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience required. Trade experience is acceptable.

c.    Must be completely dependable and neat in personal appearance and have the ability and willingness to follow instructions.

d.    Must be alert at all times and able to react calmly in an emergency.

e.    Mechanical background and interest are essential.

f.    Must be able to communicate well with people from all walks of life.

g.    Skilled in the use of tools and equipment is mandatory.

h.    Hands-on background in plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, HVAC, and electrical work.

i.    Preferred Class 4 Wastewater Treatment certificate.

j.    Preferred Class C Public Water Supply Operator certificate.

k.    Preferred Class B CDL.

l.    Valid driver’s license required.
