The Department of Physics at UTEP, with a full-professor cohort that is 50 percent female and a total faculty cohort that is 27% female is proud of its past successes in supporting diversity, equity, inclusion in science and is committed to fulfilling the visions of Ambassador Clare Boothe Luce and many other champions of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Its female faculty have secured a significant percentage of the department's funding, received invitations to open the plenary session in North Africa (2021) that recognized the  International Year for Women in Science, have initiated an annual seminar at UTEP in recognition of the International Day for Women and Girls in Science, and have exemplified UTEP's broader  commitment to excellences through inclusivity by offering other students from El Paso's community of under-represented population as well as developing nations an opportunity to excel in physics. In specific relevance of quantum computing, departmental members have been active in promoting highly visible gender-balanced symposia at national society meetings (APS and ACS), have participated in OSTP's vision aimed at jump starting Quantum Science education for under-represented high-school students and for undergraduate students at minority-serving and Hispanic-serving institutions.

The Department of Physics at UTEP has rapidly growing research programs in experimental, computational and theoretical physics. New research funding secured by Physics faculty in the last three years amounts to $7.3M, supporting efforts in diverse fields and interdisciplinary efforts linking Physics with Chemistry, Biology and Engineering. The department has access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities for optical, microscopic, magnetic, and structural materials characterizations, as well as outstanding computational capabilities. Physics faculty also contributes to interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Materials Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, Computational Science, Data Science, and Biomedical Engineering.

Job Description:

The Department of Physics, The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), seeks applications from highly qualified candidates for a tenure-track Clare Boothe Luce (CBL) Assistant Professor position in the area of materials physics related to Quantum computing and Quantum Science.  Details about the prestigious CBL professorships, which seek to expand educational opportunities for women in STEM and advance America's leadership in the sciences, may be found at  https://www.hluce.org/programs/clare-boothe-luce-program/.  

Subject to approval from the CBL advisory board and the requirements for institutional support from the foundation, the successful candidate will be designated as Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor in Physics. CBL appointments offer qualified tenure-track female candidates exceptional support in teaching and scholarship and discretionary support to support the CBL professor's professional needs.

Requirements:

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Physics or a related STEM field, possess postdoctoral experience, have a strong record of research accomplishments, and possess strong verbal and written communication skills. The Physics department is strongly interested in recruiting faculty that share a vision of inclusive excellence that resonates with UTEP and the objectives of CBL. According to the CBL website, CBL Assistant Professor candidates must:

• display the potential for excellence in teaching and research and ability to engage undergraduates in their research programs;
• demonstrate the ability to leverage the resources provided by the CBL Program and UTEP into a successful long-term research agenda;
• demonstrate deep commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in support of all students, particularly women, in their disciplines and in in the advancement of discovery in general;
• show the potential for leadership within their departments, colleges, and UTEP community, their disciplinary communities, and broader efforts to support women and other minoritized students in STEM; and  
• demonstrate commitment to support interdisciplinary research.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated attention to promoting STEM education and research opportunities to pre-college, college and graduate students, should be able to establish and maintain an independent research program at UTEP that complements the existing research in the department, teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, perform service to the Department, College and University, and engage in outreach activities. The new hire will be a core faculty of the Physics Graduate Program and instrumental in expanding the Quantum Science research in the Department of Physics.
