We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Maintenance Technician position located at our campus in San Jacinto, CA. Under general direction of the Facilities Supervisor, the Senior Maintenance Technician, performs skilled journey-level duties related to the following building trades; Electrical, Mechanical Systems (HVAC), Plumbing, Carpentry, Locksmith.  Installs, repairs and maintains building systems related to electrical, plumbing, mechanical HVAC systems, carpentry and locksmith duties; follows blueprints, diagrams and/or schematics; and, may function as the lead on projects providing technical direction and guidance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements and duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on electrical systems while observing and complying with Federal, State and Local electrical codes
  • Make necessary repairs to electrical problems including replacement of ballasts, outlets, plugs and switches. Set and adjust time clocks controlling automatic lighting systems
  • Prepare cost estimates for repair and orders materials in accordance with established procedures
  • Meet with vendors and assist contractors as required
  • Identify problems causing electrical failures and take immediate temporary measures necessary for resumption of service; recommend repair or modification needed to effect permanent correction of the problem 
  • Install:
    • maintain, diagnose, repair and/or replace plumbing fixtures and flushing mechanisms, water faucets, valves, drinking fountain, fittings and gaskets; utilize appropriate tools to clean and clear clogged drains and obstructed sewer lines
    • and repair landscape irrigation systems including control wiring and time clocks
    • flooring systems consisting of carpet tiles, vinyl flooring, ceramic tile and concrete
    • concrete forms, estimate necessary materials, pour and finish concrete
    • and repair suspended ceiling systems
  • Assist with the installation and replacement of HVAC air filter systems
  • Troubleshoot calls for service related to HVAC equipment, replace fan motors, bearings and fuses.  Assist with the installation and replacement of HVAC air filter systems
  • Frame walls with steel and wooden studs, install drywall and complete finish, texture and paint
  • Effectively and safely use hand and power tools in addition to repairing Fleet Vehicles, Utility Carts, Mowers, Edger's, Tractors and other equipment
  • Develop and implement methods for key inventory control and security, re-keying of sites, and key issuance
  • Re-pin new and existing padlocks and cylinders to the master key system, 
  • Repair, open and remove locks; disassemble locks; clear keyway of obstructions; repair, replace and altar worn tumblers, springs and other parts; re-key locks
  • Remodel offices and classrooms; build and install wall frames
  • Repair electrical problems as directed, install pull boxes, conduit and transformers
  • Receives and records supplies and materials according to established procedures
  • Read and understand blueprints/plans

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The incumbent should possess knowledge of:
  • Related repair, installation, plans, blueprints, diagrams, schematics, tools, equipment, materials, supplies, estimating time, preventative maintenance, and safety procedures for the assigned trade area
  • Common lock functions: Passage, Storeroom Closet Lock, Entrance/Office Lock, Classroom Lock and knowledge to install each lock function
  • Building construction or mechanical trades, inter-relation of various trades to facilitate orderly repairs, modifications and construction
  • Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the assigned trade area
  • Appropriate health and safety precautions and procedures
  • Applicable national, state and local codes and ordinances
  • Schools and public building construction and repair

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A high school diploma or GED; AND
  2. Five years of building maintenance/construction experience including three (3) years of specialized training or experience that will demonstrate achievement of journey-level skill in two or more of the following trades:
    1. Carpentry
    2. Electrical
    3. Masonry
    4. Painting
    5. Locksmith
    6. Plumbing
    7. HVAC; AND 
  3. One (1) year of professional leadership experience as a designated lead person; AND 
  4. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 60-days of hire, a valid California driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District.
    • If selected, employment commencement is contingent upon successful enrollment in the District’s DMV Pull Program.   Employees enrolled in the DMV Pull Program MUST continuously maintain a driving record that meets District requirements set forth in the current policy as it relates to allowable types of infractions and points.

Substitution for the professional experience requirement are allowed, as follows:

  •  A reasonably equivalent combination of training, certificate and experience as maintenance mechanic that will demonstrate achievement of the required skill level

SPECIAL NOTES

Journey-level is defined as:

  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship program; OR
  • State licensure in the trade; OR
  • Three (3) years of experience in the trade verified in writing by a full journey-level individual

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 
Initial salary placement for this position is from
Step 1 to Step 3 depending on the amount of reasonably related experience.  The job is a Classified position, Level 22working full time, 40 hours per week, 12 months. The position serves District-Wide; applicants may be assigned to any district facility.  The current work schedule is 6:00 am - 3:30 pm Monday - Thursday; 7:00 am - 11:00 am Friday. Work hours are subject to change depending on department needs.
 
A twelve-month probationary period must be successfully completed before the selected candidate is considered a permanent employee of the District.  The District provides a contribution towards medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.  Vacation and sick leave are provided.  PERS participation is required for retirement eligible employees.  As a condition of employment candidates will be required to complete a live scan for fingerprint clearance and a Tuberculosis (TB) test/Tuberculosis Risk Assessment form developed by the State Department of Public Health. Candidates must have an insurable driver’s record.

MSJC is located about 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 50 miles west of Palm Springs.
