Visiting Assistant Professor in Neuroscience

Neuroscience Program, Lake Forest College

The Lake Forest College Neuroscience Program invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor faculty position in Neuroscience. The position starts August 2023 with a possibility of renewal. Applicants should expect to teach three undergraduate courses per semester (i.e., a 3:3 load). The candidate will be expected to teach our lecture- and lab-based core course NEUR 301 Neuroscience I: Neuron to Brain. This course serves neuroscience, biology, and biochemistry/molecular biology students and it explores basic concepts of brain and behavior from a sub-organismal perspective. Other courses would be some combination of an introductory neuroscience course for the major, an upper-level elective course, or a senior seminar in the applicant’s area of expertise. Successful applicants will have research expertise and interests in neuroscience and demonstrate enthusiasm for a liberal arts education. This position requires a Ph.D. in Neuroscience or a closely related field (or ABD status with PhD completed by the start date). Postdoctoral training is preferred.

Our Neuroscience Program has a successful record of mentoring PhD scientists for future tenure-track faculty careers at liberal arts colleges. We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are key to academic excellence and seek candidates whose professional and lived experiences strengthen their ability to teach and mentor students across various spectrums of diversity. Members of our interdisciplinary program are affiliated with various departments, including Biology, Psychology, Computer Science, Theater, Music, Philosophy, and English, and we welcome candidates with interdisciplinary teaching and research interests. We are part of a thriving Chicago area neuroscience community of educators and researchers, and our college enjoys a strong institutional partnership with Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

A highly selective liberal arts college, Lake Forest College enrolls approximately 1,700 students from more than 40 states and from more than 100 countries. Lake Forest is one of the most diverse small colleges in the Midwest with nearly 40% of our student body comprised of domestic students of color and international students. The majority of our STEM pool is female and also includes a significant number of first generation and traditionally underrepresented students. At Lake Forest College, the quality of a faculty member’s teaching is the most important criterion for evaluation. Lake Forest College embraces diversity and encourages applications from women, members of historically underrepresented groups, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

In a single PDF, please send the following: 1) a cover letter that describes your motivation for applying and how a liberal arts environment dedicated to diversity and inclusion aligns with your teaching philosophy, 2) a current CV, and 3) a statement of teaching philosophy that includes evidence of teaching effectiveness. Please request that letters be sent directly from at least two recommenders. All documents should be sent electronically to Professor Shubhik DebBurman, neurosearch@lakeforest.edu. Review of applications will begin on February 15, 2023.
