Job Description

Plan, develop and directs strategy for recruiting, counseling and coaching student athletes in both the men's and women's golf program. Directs the conditioning of student athletes to achieve maximum athletic performance, assesses players' skills and assigns team positions, evaluates own and opposition team capabilities to determine strategy, and coaches or directs coaches to instruct players in techniques of game.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Overall administration and organization of both the men’s and women’s golf program. General organization of all practices. Administrative duties such as budgets, purchase orders, trip requests and travel coordination.
  • Recruitment of in state and out of state athletes. Advising, retention and counseling of current student athletes.
  • Promote college in positive light. Promote student academic and athletic success.
  • Monitor and report student-athlete attendance and grades to ensure compliance with eligibility policy and student success to graduation.
  • Responsible for community relations including planning and implementing projects such as fundraising.
  • Responsible for the purchase of equipment including equipment bidding and purchasing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Performance Measurements

  1. To understand policies and procedures, rules, code of conduct and eligibility requirements of national and state athletic associations.  (NJCAA/KJCCC)
  2. To adhere to community life, national athletic association and state standards.
  3. To demonstrate leadership on our campus through the recruitment and development of  athletic teams.
  4. To manage within budgetary guidelines.
  5. To adhere to a strong sense of public perception/GCCC and the City of Garden City.
  6. Be available to travel with teams.

Knowledge and Skills

Experience: Two years to five years of similar or related experience.

Education: A Bachelor's degree.

Interpersonal Skills:  The ability to motivate or influence others is a material part of the job, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust.   Obtaining cooperation (internally and/or externally) is an important part of the job and a high level of interpersonal skills is critical to the success of this position. Work frequently involves contacts requiring considerable discussion of problems, material presentations, and resolving issues impacting departments or divisions.

Other Skills: BS Degree in physical education, recreation, health or related field or equivalent plus 4-5 years experience with college level program or as a high school head coach.  Experience in an academic discipline or higher education, and two years recruiting background desired. Must have knowledge of national rules and regulations. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are necessary.  Ability to maintain confidential information in professional manner required. Ability to recruit off campus and to lead and supervise players and coaches. The ability to get along with a wide variety of people in various situations.  Computer proficiency necessary (Microsoft Office preferred).

Physical Requirements: Work requires moderate physical exertion and long periods of standing, walking, riding in bus or vehicle, some recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities.  Job may require occasional lifting of heavy objects (over 50 pounds).  Job requires above average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment: Occasional exposure to objectional conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions.
