45%. This is the number of deaths attributable to fibrotic disorders worldwide across all organs. Lung fibrosis is particularly devastating with a median lifespan of just 3-5 years from time of diagnosis of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). This burden is increasing due to the combined impact of an aging global population, declining air quality, and chronic manifestations of COVID-19 infection.

The Exploratory Disease Area (DAx) at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is seeking an experienced, motivated, scientist and leader with experience of anti-fibrosis drug discovery to join the team in our mission to discover and develop ground-breaking new therapies for patients with chronic fibrotic diseases.

Our highly motivated team is working to discover and progress the next wave of new therapeutics that will halt fibrotic diseases across multiple organs including the lung as a key focus. A strong background in progressing drug discovery projects from target concept & validation, through candidate selection, and to early clinical stage testing is essential. A track record of hands-on mentorship and development of other scientists is also crucial. Other key skills include a proven ability to formulate and execute project strategy in collaboration with team members, to designing and planning of experiments, and focusing on strong teamwork and the ability to solve sophisticated scientific problems.

You will lead and mentor multiple research labs and work collaboratively across DAx and interact with a global network of researchers working towards the understanding and discovery of novel therapeutics that address fibrosis across multiple organs.

Minimum Requirements

What You'll Bring to the Role:

* Ph.D or MD/Ph.D
* Postdoctoral experience with 8+ years of demonstrated related ability in industry
* Deep knowledge of drug discovery: expertise in designing drug discovery flow charts comprising cell and biochemical assays and ability to enable deep mechanistic and pharmacological characterization of lead candidates
* Team orientated and collaborative work ethic
* Demonstrated leadership experience: mentoring trainees through to senior lab scientists

Desirable Skills:

* Expertise in fibrosis biology and drug discovery

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $166,400 and $249,600 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
