Position Description

Under supervision, this position supports the Distance Education program by staffing the Help Desk, providing technical expertise to support and assist instructors with instructional course management issues like testing and archiving, course imports, and providing data on current student information and enrollments to the appropriate departments or staff; collaborate with area manager, Distance Education Faculty Facilitator, and Distance Education Support Specialist to plan, develop, and implement changes to Distance Education processes and procedures, faculty training, and Distance Education student support services; and develop and deliver technical training objectives in use of the district's chosen learning management software (LMS).

Responsibilities

  • Provide initial coordination and ongoing support of faculty and staff in existing and new District-supported technologies.
  • Assist individual faculty members and departments in developing and implementing training activities to increase faculty knowledge of technology as it relates to delivering online distance, in-class, or hybrid instruction.
  • Provide technical expertise to support and assist faculty with instructional software and equipment.
  • Maintain technology, distance education, and other professional development reference materials library as appropriate and applicable to area of assignment.
  • Assist in developing and updating district faculty technology training and distance education materials including manuals, procedures, newsletters, college catalog, schedule, and website.
  • Act as primary interface with distance education vendors/technical support for resolving problems as assigned.
  • Identify and initiate resolutions to student and faculty problems and concerns.
  • Assist students in the operation of the College's course management system, including resetting passwords and answering hardware and software questions by telephone or by email.
  • Order adequate stock of supplies for the Distance Education program.
  • Assist instructors with course management issues like archiving courses, test conversions, enrollment management, and backing up files.
  • Querie the College's MIS system for student information necessary for enrollments and reports information as needed to IT or to the distance Education Support Specialist.
  • Updates the course management system information and settings for accuracy.
  • May train student assistants.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Clear evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Associate's degree.
  • Two (2) years of experience assisting non-technical users with software/hardware application training.
  • Ability to operate a computer and essential software including Microsoft Office and the College course management system.
  • Ability to effectively support and communicate with students in online classes with technological and software-related questions or concerns.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the dean, faculty, and staff in the Distance Education program.
  • Ability to carry out assigned duties with a minimum of supervision.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • College-level coursework or other specialized technical training in online instructional technologies.
  • Experience in applying current distance education and online instruction technologies.

Working hours: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:30pm .  Hours may vary according to the assignment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a full-time, 12-month, classified bargaining unit position.  Starting date:  as soon as possible.  Range 18 of the CSEA Salary Schedule, with a starting salary of Step A, $4,665. Excellent benefit package.
