Pasadena City College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Career Counselor commencing on July 1, 2023.   

 We are committed to helping all students achieve their educational goals, including those of every race, religion, gender, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, regardless of background and level of preparation. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COUNSELOR - CAREER:

  • Provide equity-minded solutions that support student success services 
  • Provide support to meet the Student Equity and Achievement Program (SEAP) objectives
  • Assist students in career exploration, decision-making, and goal setting strategies utilizing career resources to address career uncertainty
  • Provide individual and group career counseling services to students
  • Assist students in addressing a variety of personal challenges which may be interfering with their personal, educational and/or career goals
  • Assist students in assessing abilities, skills and interests, administer and interpret career related assessments
  • Design and deliver group presentations, workshops and orientations for students, faculty, and community groups on career related topics
  • Provides outreach and marketing of Career & Completion Center services to specialized on-campus programs, academic divisions, and the campus community as a whole
  • Provide counseling and programing support for Guided Pathways and Career Communities
  • Oversees training and supervision for Career Advisors and Counseling Interns
  • Develop abbreviated and comprehensive student educational plans
  • Assist students in interpreting requirements and information pertaining to obtaining certificates, associate degree and transfer related information in written and computerized form
  • Assist students in assessing, planning and implementing their short-term and long-term educational and career goals
  • Lead group counseling sessions for a variety of student groups including new students, academic probation, those interested in earning an AA/AS, transfer, CTE, etc.
  • Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and campus departments to identify, define, and meet student career planning and placement needs, goals, and objectives
  • Develop career services and career counseling approaches for changing student populations including students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, non-traditional students, and re-entry students
  • Support the acquisition, maintenance, and dissemination of information regarding career fields and employment opportunities for full-time, part-time, internship, and work-study opportunities
  • Develop programs and services designed to equip students and alumni with necessary job search skills and employment preparation strategies
  • Effectively represent the Career & Completion Center within various groups including the faculty, student government, employers, the general public and/or media
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of internet applications and databases that support and deliver career services to the college, students, alumni, and employers
  • Prepare qualified job candidates for the opportunity to interview for posted jobs, assist with resume development and review
  • Provides appropriate and relevant labor market information to help students in their job search
  • Teach credit career development classes
  • Serve as a liaison to high schools to provide accurate information and assistance
  • Participate in appropriate professional organizations, attend conferences and workshops to ensure skills and knowledge are current
  • Provide outreach services to potential students and the community regarding the educational opportunities and student services available 
  • Participate in professional development activities that support best practices for teaching a diverse population of both major and non-major students
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum
  • Participate in the recruitment, outreach, and development of internship opportunities for students
  • Participate with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes.  Use the results to improve teaching and learning
  • Undertake the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member
  • Participate in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned 
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and commitment to Student Equity
  • Knowledge of current issues, trends, and best practices in student services
  • Knowledge of specific approaches, theories, and strategies to address disparities in student success and access to higher education for diverse student groups
  • Knowledgeable about current local labor market information, including: Employers and industries in the region; Los Angeles Regional Consortia targeted industries and high-skill, high-growth occupations, and detailed information about entry into these industries and occupations
  • Experience with Career Pathways as described by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office
  • Knowledgeable about transferable skills from one industry or occupation to another
  • Ability to collaborate with other offices and individuals on campus who provide career development, job placement, apprenticeships, mentorships and internships, to ensure a coordinated effort, and the broadest possible range of extra- and co-curricular practical experiences for students
  • Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities and abilities
  • Knowledge of current practices in distance education including learning management systems such as Canvas
  • Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles
  • Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous groups who are historically underrepresented and underserved
  • Recent experience working with minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shapes patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning techniques


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling

The equivalent

Note: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.

Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC’s Equivalency Committee.  It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Familiarity with community college career counseling
  • Working knowledge, application, and interpretation of Myers Briggs Type Indicator and Strong’s Interest Inventory assessment
  • Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and/or Strong’s Interest Inventory (SII) Certification
  • Demonstrate commitment and skills in issues related to equity and excellence
  • Cultural competency as it relates to the understanding of and sensitivity to meeting the needs of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students
  • Strong commitment to professional growth and development, and to the continued innovation and improvement of successful career counseling principals
  • Teach credit personal growth and career development classes
  • Experience in using student-centered and innovative pedagogies to teach and motivate students at all levels of college-readiness
  • Up-to-date experience and/or training in online instruction and knowledge of best practices in distance education
  • Demonstrated awareness and/or implementation of effective course assessment techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, faculty, administrators and staff), as well as, off-campus community and education partners

THE ASSIGNMENT: 

Eleven Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning July 2023

Thirty-five (35) hours per week, plus five (5) hours for professional growth and development activities, college governance, and other professional responsibilities.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

  • Successful completion of livescan clearance and TB screening
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109

MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT:  Pasadena City College offers a retirement plan through the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS). CalSTRS Defined Benefit Employer contributes 16.15% and there are two formulas.

  • (Classic Member – Formula 2% @ 60): If you became a member prior to January 1, 2013. As of July 1, 2020, the employee contribution is 10.25%.
  •  (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2% @ 62): If you are hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. As of July 1, 2020, the employee contribution is 10.205% and subject to change annually.
Contribution rates are subject to change based on the Los Angele County Office of Education annual actuarial valuation. CalSTRS members do not pay into Social Security

COMPUTER LOAN PROGRAM: The College provides an interest-free loan to employees for the purchase of computer hardware or software. The maximum amount of the loan is $4,000.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS: Two employee assistance programs that are free and available 24/7. Both programs are a counseling referral and provide confidential counseling help regarding marital discord, family problems, job-related stress, travel, funeral planning.
VACATION: Unit members who are on twelve-month assignments are eligible for twenty-two (22) work days of vacation per year without loss of salary, such vacation time to be earned at the rate of one and five-sixths days per month of service.  If a legal holiday occurs during the period of such vacation, the legal holiday is not charged against the vacation accrued.

Each eligible employee will take the earned vacation not later than the fiscal year following the time such vacation is earned.  It is expected that the employee will use the vacation annually so that not more than ten (10) days will be carried over. Employees who have accrued vacation due at time of reassignment, retirement or resignation shall receive payment for such time not to exceed thirty-two (32) work days for any one (1) fiscal year.

Employees accruing vacation time in excess of thirty-two (32) days as of June 30th in any year will be paid at the appropriate daily rate for the excess.  The Superintendent-President may waive this rule under limited circumstances. The Superintendent-President has the right to require the use of up to twenty-two (22) days of vacation in any fiscal year.

SICK LEAVE:  Employee shall earn paid sick leave time at the rate of one (1) day for each month of paid service on an unlimited accumulated basis. Employees who have earned sick leave hours on an hourly/daily assignment with the District, and who become regular contract employees shall have their hourly/daily sick leave converted to days at the rate of one day for each four (4) hours of sick leave already earned if credit employees, or one (1) day for each five (5) hours of sick leave already earned if noncredit employees. When a regular academic employee is absent from duties because of illness or   injury, pay is determined in the following manner:
Full salary for such absence if the period of absence does not exceed the unused portion of current and accumulated sick leave benefits.
The difference between the employee’s salary and the amount paid a temporary employee employed to fill his or her position, or if no temporary employee was employed, the amount that would have been paid to the temporary employee had he or she been employed, for up to five school months less the number of days of current and accumulated sick leave previously used in that school year.  (Education Code § 87780)
 For full-time employees with less than a five-day assignment, sick leave will be charged at the rate of one (1) day for each day of absence unless the employee fails to meet all classes scheduled during a week, in which case the employee will be charged with the number of days school was in session for that week.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE:  A regular employee shall be allowed up to three (3) days of paid leave of absence for death of an immediate family member, or five (5) days if out-of-state travel of the employee is required.  “Immediate family” shall be defined as husband, wife, domestic partner, son, daughter, father, mother, brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandfather or grandmother of the employee or of the spouse/domestic partner of the employee, or any relative living in the immediate household of the employee, or any other person for whom the employee is legally responsible.  Bereavement leave is not applicable when an employee is on unpaid leave of absence or during unscheduled workdays for employees on less than 12-month assignments. Up to one (1) day leave with pay may be granted if it is necessary for an employee to make funeral arrangements or to attend the funeral of close relatives not living in the immediate household.  Up to one-half day with pay may be granted to attend the funeral of a distant relative or a close friend provided no substitution is needed.
INDIVIDUAL POLICIES: Additional Insurance policies are available such as short-term disability, hospital confinement indemnity, sickness indemnity, cancer, accident, and lump sum critical illness.
IRC Section 125: A cafeteria plan available to all employees that allow pre-tax money to pay for qualified medical and dental expenses and child care.
TAX-SHELTERED ACCOUNT: Employees (along with their immediate family members) are eligible to become members. 457(b) deferred compensation plans available, 403 (b) TSA plans, and Roth 403(b) plans.
VOLUNTARY PET INSURANCES: Employee has the option in signing up for a PPO plan or HMO plan
VOLUNTARY LIFE INSURANCE: Plan is available for employee to purchase.
VOLUNTARY ACCIDENTAL DEATH & DISMEMBERMENT: Plan is available for employee to purchase.
