The primary responsibility of Clackamas Community College instructors is to instruct. Faculty members shall prepare and present the content and material of their courses. They shall conduct their classes in a manner which will reflect dignity of scholarship and provide a suitable atmosphere for learning.

 

Instruction is the primary function of the College; all operations of the institution exist to facilitate this goal. Through professional services of high quality and effective faculty, educational excellence can be achieved.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 

Instructors shall:

Be responsible for imparting knowledge and developing skills through the instructional process under the direction of the department, the division and the College Administration. In carrying out their responsibilities, instructors shall exercise independent judgment based on adequate knowledge of subject matter, professional goals of subjects taught, teaching strategies, interpersonal relationships, and teaching theories and methodologies.

Instructors will be responsible for meeting classes, instructing, advising, assisting and tutoring students, and performing other tasks related to instruction as assigned. Instructors will be expected to spend thirty (30) hours a week on campus, excluding overloads and lunch hours, but including off campus instruction, distance education classes, telecommuting, or job-related meetings. It is not anyone's intent to regularly monitor working hours, but it is recognized that instructors will fulfill their professional assignments as set forth herein. Instructors realize that their professional responsibilities may occasionally require more than the expected thirty (30) hours referred to above.

In addition to instruction, related assignments include, but are not limited to:

  1. Course and materials preparation.
  2. Reviewing and evaluating student progress.
  3. Compiling data for routine reports as required by the College.
  4. Assisting in the revision and development of course, curriculum, media, and committee concerns.
  5. Attending and participating in department, division, and College meetings, and committee concerns.
  6. Staff development, community services, and project development.

Some instructional situations are unique; for example, team teaching, clinical settings, and open labs. Instructional assignments will be made as required to accommodate these unique teaching and/or developmental situations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

Teach a variety of classes related to automotive technology. Develop instructional materials, curriculum, lab activities, assessment instruments for automotive technology courses. Ability to operate typical automotive machinery and complete training for new equipment as necessary. Work any shift as is required to meet student demand. This may include mornings, afternoons, and evenings with the possibility of some weekends. Act as a liaison to industry and to local high school teachers/students. Be involved with the college community and committee service.

Work well with people of all ages from academically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds. Ability to exemplify traits that reflect the College’s culture, including integrity, a customer service orientation, cultural competency, trustworthiness, flexibility and a willingness to embrace change.


AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS:       

Provide support to other department personnel as needed based on workload and staffing levels.

Maintain work areas in a manner that meets an automotive shop standard of excellence.  

Qualifications

MINIMUM/MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of work experience in a commercial automotive service repair facility beyond the normal training or preparation time.  Specialized training may include, but is not limited to, licensed apprenticeship programs, community college associate degree programs, and/or other professionally certified or licensed training.

  • Ability to exemplify traits that reflect the College’s culture, including integrity, a customer service orientation, cultural competency, trustworthiness, flexibility and a willingness to change.

Certifications:

 Possession of all 8 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications, or a minimum of 6 ASEs with the commitment to complete the remaining certifications by the end of probation.

All instructors must hold the following ASE certifications prior to employment:

  1. G1 Maintenance & Light Repair
  2. A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems

All instructors must hold the following ASE certifications prior to teaching engine performance courses:

  1. A8 Engine Performance
  2. L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES:

Valid Driver's License acceptable in the State of Oregon

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION: 

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the use of step stools in order to retrieve archived materials. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis such as papers, files, boxes, equipment, computers, etc., and rarely requires moving materials weighing over 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, monitor, projector, calculator, printer, and standard office equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Working in shop areas with exposure to various automotive fumes and fluids. Both classroom and shop conditions, some noise, smells, and obstruction hazards and requiring continuous use of personal protective equipment, i.e., safety glasses, gloves, skin protection, and hearing protection.  Position may have minimal responsibility for driving.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Supervision of other personnel is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel and may assign work to student workers.  When a lab tech has been assigned to aid in lab sessions, then the responsibility would be to determine how to best use the help in setting up and/or running demonstrations, aiding students with projects, and controlling the lab to promote a safe working environment.

Works under the general direction of the Dean of Technology, Applied Science and Public Services.
