Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching plus five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities for a total of 45.5 hours/week for each of two 16-week semesters.

Pasadena City College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Speech Communication Instructor commencing with the 2023-2024 academic year.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SPEECH COMMUNICATIONS INSTRUCTOR: 

  • Teach classes in this discipline/area
  • Participate in professional development activities that support best practices for teaching a diverse population of both major and non-major students
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum
  • Participate in the recruitment, outreach, and development of internship opportunities for students
  • Participate with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes.  Use the results to improve teaching and learning
  • Undertake the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member
  • Participate in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities
  • Teach classes in interpersonal communication, public speaking, argumentation, small group communication, and speech communication theory 
PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: 

  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles
  • Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous groups who are historically underrepresented and underserved
  • Recent experience working with minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shapes patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning techniques


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Master’s degree in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communications, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication.
 
 OR
 
Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND master’s degree in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English.
 
 OR
 
Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC’s Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.  

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience in using student-centered and innovative pedagogies to teach and motivate students at all levels of college-readiness 
  • Demonstrated implementation of effective course assessment techniques 
  • Demonstrated experience teaching at the community college level or equivalent 


THE ASSIGNMENT: 
Ten Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning August 2023.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful completion of LiveScan clearance and TB screening
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109

If you are a member of CalSTRS Plan A, the cash benefit is 66.67% of your monthly salary (up to $3,000) starting 140 days after you are out of work and continuing for 1 year or up to age 70, whichever comes first
MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT:  Pasadena City College offers a retirement plan through the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS). CalSTRS Defined Benefit Employer contributes 16.15% and there are two formulas.

  • (Classic Member – Formula 2% @ 60): If you became a member prior to January 1, 2013. As of July 1, 2020, the employee contribution is 10.25%.
  •  (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2% @ 62): If you are hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. As of July 1, 2020, the employee contribution is 10.205% and subject to change annually.
Contribution rates are subject to change based on the Los Angele County Office of Education annual actuarial valuation. CalSTRS members do not pay into Social Security

COMPUTER LOAN PROGRAM: The College provides an interest-free loan to employees for the purchase of computer hardware or software. The maximum amount of the loan is $4,000.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS: Two employee assistance programs that are free and available 24/7. Both programs are a counseling referral and provide confidential counseling help regarding marital discord, family problems, job-related stress, travel, funeral planning.
VACATION: Unit members who are on twelve-month assignments are eligible for twenty-two (22) work days of vacation per year without loss of salary, such vacation time to be earned at the rate of one and five-sixths days per month of service.  If a legal holiday occurs during the period of such vacation, the legal holiday is not charged against the vacation accrued.

Each eligible employee will take the earned vacation not later than the fiscal year following the time such vacation is earned.  It is expected that the employee will use the vacation annually so that not more than ten (10) days will be carried over. Employees who have accrued vacation due at time of reassignment, retirement or resignation shall receive payment for such time not to exceed thirty-two (32) work days for any one (1) fiscal year.

Employees accruing vacation time in excess of thirty-two (32) days as of June 30th in any year will be paid at the appropriate daily rate for the excess.  The Superintendent-President may waive this rule under limited circumstances. The Superintendent-President has the right to require the use of up to twenty-two (22) days of vacation in any fiscal year.

SICK LEAVE:  Employee shall earn paid sick leave time at the rate of one (1) day for each month of paid service on an unlimited accumulated basis. Employees who have earned sick leave hours on an hourly/daily assignment with the District, and who become regular contract employees shall have their hourly/daily sick leave converted to days at the rate of one day for each four (4) hours of sick leave already earned if credit employees, or one (1) day for each five (5) hours of sick leave already earned if noncredit employees. When a regular academic employee is absent from duties because of illness or   injury, pay is determined in the following manner:
Full salary for such absence if the period of absence does not exceed the unused portion of current and accumulated sick leave benefits.
The difference between the employee’s salary and the amount paid a temporary employee employed to fill his or her position, or if no temporary employee was employed, the amount that would have been paid to the temporary employee had he or she been employed, for up to five school months less the number of days of current and accumulated sick leave previously used in that school year.  (Education Code § 87780)
 For full-time employees with less than a five-day assignment, sick leave will be charged at the rate of one (1) day for each day of absence unless the employee fails to meet all classes scheduled during a week, in which case the employee will be charged with the number of days school was in session for that week.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE:  A regular employee shall be allowed up to three (3) days of paid leave of absence for death of an immediate family member, or five (5) days if out-of-state travel of the employee is required.  “Immediate family” shall be defined as husband, wife, domestic partner, son, daughter, father, mother, brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandfather or grandmother of the employee or of the spouse/domestic partner of the employee, or any relative living in the immediate household of the employee, or any other person for whom the employee is legally responsible.  Bereavement leave is not applicable when an employee is on unpaid leave of absence or during unscheduled workdays for employees on less than 12-month assignments. Up to one (1) day leave with pay may be granted if it is necessary for an employee to make funeral arrangements or to attend the funeral of close relatives not living in the immediate household.  Up to one-half day with pay may be granted to attend the funeral of a distant relative or a close friend provided no substitution is needed.
INDIVIDUAL POLICIES: Additional Insurance policies are available such as short-term disability, hospital confinement indemnity, sickness indemnity, cancer, accident, and lump sum critical illness.
IRC Section 125: A cafeteria plan available to all employees that allow pre-tax money to pay for qualified medical and dental expenses and child care.
TAX-SHELTERED ACCOUNT: Employees (along with their immediate family members) are eligible to become members. 457(b) deferred compensation plans available, 403 (b) TSA plans, and Roth 403(b) plans.
