WELCOME TO SANTA MONICA COLLEGE! Thank you for your interest in joining the SMC team as an Instructional Assistant - Learning Disabilities. These positions assist in the Learning Disabilities Program by testing and tutoring learning-disabled students in order to help them to achieve academic success. The current vacancy is scheduled to work Tuesday through Friday, 9:30 A.M. to 2:30 P.M., 20 hours per week, 11 months per year.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate understanding of students with disabilities in a college environment, possess experience tutoring students with disabilities, and be competent in tutoring multiple disciplines at a college environment. The incumbent will possess a high degree of attention to detail, be able to work independently, be adaptable, work in a diverse environment, be proficient with office systems including Microsoft Office suite, maintain accurate records, and effectively communicate and explain information to others, both orally and in writing.

Salary Placement
New Employees: Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. A new permanent classified employee may request a higher salary placement based on recruitment issues and/or additional training and experience which greatly exceeds the minimum requirements. Please note that salary placement above the third step requires additional approvals by Santa Monica College executive staff.

Current Employees: Upon promotion, the new salary for a current, permanent employee is based on Merit Rule 12.2.8. In accordance with this rule, employees are entitled to at least a one-step (5%) salary increase, and may be eligible for advanced step placement in accordance with established criteria.

About the Selection Process
The selection process will consist of a Written Exam (Pass Fail) , a Scored Training and Experience Evaluation (Pass/Fail), (click here for more information on the training & experience evaluation process) and a Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted 100%). All candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and pass the Written Exam and the Training and Experience Evaluation will advance to the Qualifications Appraisal Interview (weighted at 100%). Candidates must be successful on the Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a score of 70.00 or better for their name to appear on the eligibility list. 

The eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to fill any vacancies that occur during the one year life of the eligibility list, including permanent and temporary positions. Santa Monica College reserves the right to modify the stated test components and weights prior to the administration of any test.

Test Retake Policy
Based on the District’s hiring needs, we may administer multiple recruitments for this job classification (or a related job classification that uses the same test(s)) within the next several months. Examples of Duties

Tutors students individually and in small groups using individualized training materials and strategies approved by the Learning Specialist and instructors

Administers psycho-educational tests to certify learning disabled students and to determine educational needs

Grades psycho-educational tests and submit results to the Chancellor's Office by Computer Assisted Records System (CARS)

Assists students to develop proper study skill techniques, such as strategies for reading textbooks, note-taking, and listening skills

Maintains accurate and detailed records of students' individualized learning programs and progress to ensure compliance with state special education funding requirements

Confers with the Learning Specialist and instructors regarding changes or modifications in individual learning programs

Performs clerical duties such as preparation of files, filing, answering phones, sending and receiving student records, and photocopying forms

May refer students to other services on the campus

Performs other related duties as requested or assigned

Examples of essential duties are descriptive and not restrictive in nature and are generally listed in descending order of importance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education Requirement:
Successful completion of eighteen (18) semester hours of college coursework in Special Education, Learning Theory, Learning Disabilities, or Developmental Psychology or a BA/BS in any subject.

Experience Requirement:
Experience tutoring students with Learning Disabilities is desirable.

Education/Experience Equivalency:
An equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training may substitute for the listed minimum requirements.

None

Santa Monica College offers a comprehensive benefits package including vacation, holiday, and sick leave as well as medical, dental, vision, and life insurance for permanent positions. Permanent full-time positions of 35 hours or more receive fully paid District benefits. Permanent position assignments of 20 to 34 hours per week receive a pro-rated benefits package as outlined in CSEA Chapter 36 Bargaining Agreement.

Temporary positions and permanent position assignments of less than 20 hours per week do not have a benefits package.
