THE OPPORTUNITY

Highline College (HC) is seeking qualified applicants for a Lecturer (8/9 of Full-Time, renewable annually) in Medical Assisting. The successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to use equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning for racially, ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse students, including designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline(s) or program(s). The successful candidate should be able to teach courses in all Healthcare Professions Department programs including Medical Assistant, Clinic Service Representative and Community Health and Wellness. Courses may include Clinical Procedures, Medical Terminology and Anatomy, Human Disease and Pharmacology, Law and Ethics for Healthcare Professionals, and Medical Insurance.

HC Medical Assisting Lecturer faculty teach an equivalent of eight five-credit courses through the year, advise students, and participate in College service.


This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2023.

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Healthcare Professions Department at Highline College admitted its first Medical Assistantclass in 1979. The department has since expanded its healthcare programs and offers thefollowing Professional Technical degrees and certificates: Medical Assistant (AAS and Certificate),Clinic Service Representative Certificate and Community Health and Wellness AAS. The MedicalAssistant Program has specialized national accreditation through the Commission on Accreditationfor Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teaching: 
    • Teach courses in medical assisting in the Healthcare Professions Department(teaching assignment may include evening/weekend, online, hybrid, and off-campus sections);
    • Demonstrate culturally-responsive teaching practices;
    • Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;
    • Provide on-campus and/or online instruction in Medical Assisting/HealthcareProfessions designed to promote effective learning;
    • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment for students using diverseteaching methods to support and enhance student success;
    • Develop, assess, and analyze student achievement of course learning outcomes withgoal of enhancing and improving student learning;
    • Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes and fully participate in the college’s program improvement/program review process;
    • Advise students in planning their educational programs and in selecting courses;pursue appropriate professional development activities related to advising;
    • Participate in department, division, and other College activities, including Collegegovernance;
    • Participate in faculty development opportunities related to discipline, program, and/ormethods of teaching;
    • Remain current in discipline(s)/program(s), including participating in the design,assessment, review and revision of courses, where appropriate, in response todevelopments in the field;
  • Service: Engage in department, division, and college initiatives; participate in shared governance; promote the college’s values, and perform other contracted duties (for example, advising, and community outreach) as required. Provide academic advising to Medical Assisting students, including developing individualized transfer school specific plans. Provide coaching for students with regard to how to succeed in
    Medical Assisting, covering a broad range of student needs. Contribute to class scheduling, department policymaking, and choices of course materials and pedagogy. Be actively involved in department, division and college activities; collaborate with colleagues on innovative course materials, teaching and assessment methods, and department policies; engage in department, division, and college initiatives; promote and apply the College’s values: access, collaboration, community, diversity, excellence, integrity, internationalization, and learning; perform other contracted duties.
  • Professional development: Maintain competence in teaching and the discipline through professional development activities.

Faculty-wide skills and abilities

Faculty are responsible for developing, modifying, and assessing curricula; continuously improving teaching methodology and student-centered learning; staying current in the field; advising students in developing and monitoring their academic plans; maintaining scheduled availability to students; participating with other faculty in developing and managing courses, curricula and academic policy; participating in department and college activities, including committee work and college service; involvement with accreditation and other professional duties related to the position that contribute to the success of the college.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two years of employment in a healthcare facility, including a minimum of 160 hours in an ambulatory healthcare setting performing or observing administrative and clinical procedures performed by medical assistants.); AND

  • Currently credentialed and maintain good standing in medical assisting, by one of the following organizations:  CMA (AAMA), NCMA (NCCT), or RMA (AMT); AND

  • Associate degree or Associate of Applied Science (or higher) degree in a related field from a regionally or nationally-accredited institution.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certified MA-C through the Department of Health Washington State;
  • Knowledgeable about the MAERB Core Curriculum;
  • Classroom, laboratory, and clinical teaching experience, preferably at the community college or undergraduate level;
  • Willingness to develop work-based learning in the community;
  • Experience training externs or medical assistants;
  • Experience working in multicultural/diverse environments and/or fluency in an additional language(s).

Supplemental Information

SALARY, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT, APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

Salary and Benefits:

Initial annual salary placement ranges from $ 56,636 – $64,674 based on current contract for a standard 170-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale. Placement on the salary scale in accordance with the HC-Highline College Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.


A standard 170-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year. This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.


This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. Salary, retirement, medical and insurance benefits are provided in accordance with state regulations and may be subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements. Conditions of Employment:
