Position Summary

The Nursing Instructor is to support the College’s mission and underlying principles by providing quality instruction in Nursing and Clinicals classes that align with the needs of the College’s service area. Planning, teaching, reporting, recordkeeping, student recruitment, student advisement, job placement, follow-up, and equipment upkeep are integral parts of the teaching position. The instructor’s responsibilities will include: teaching medical-surgical/maternal-child nursing courses. Works collaboratively with area clinical and hospital staff; and maintains current nursing knowledge to ensure excellence in nursing education at Lawson State Community College.

Salary Schedule: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule D1 ($44,780-$87,562) based on education and experience. Summer appointments are based on enrollment-Salary Schedule D1 ($13,825-$27,081) based on education and experience. Annual Potential Salary including Summer Appointment ($58,605-$114,643).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Teach 30-35 contact hours or 15-16 credit hours per semester and/or the equivalent in non-credit hours or a combination of the credit and non-credit course offerings.
2. Instructor must be available to teach in day, night, weekend classes, and training opportunities if necessary.
3. Regular and consistent attendance at work and record/maintain student attendance records.
4. Prepare and maintain current course syllabus according to the College’s guidelines.
5. Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state plan of study established curriculum. 
6. Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students. 
7. Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students. 
8. If teaching online, maintain an active presence in the online environment, participate in discussion boards and follow all prescribed eCollege guidelines and practices as outline within your training and housed in the eCollege Faculty Manual.
9. Actively participates in and works with other school personnel in the selections of books, equipment and other instructional materials in order to provide students with optimal learning opportunities.
10. Achieve and maintain program accreditation/certification and teaching credentials ad technical certifications.
11. Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty.
12. Reviews curriculum and makes routine adjustments in both ground and online courses.
13. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
14. Works to diffuse conflict and mediate through problems with students and colleagues.
15. Maintain lab equipment and supplies.
16. Prepare program course offerings for schedule for each semester and term.
17. Develop and evaluate Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for instructional specialty.
18. Collaborate with other unit programs to develop and implement divisional goals.
19. Knowledge of institution’s program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
20. Recruit students into program and advise them through completion.
21. Serve on divisional, institutional, and state-wide committees as appointed.
22. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
23. Work with college ADA coordinator to provide appropriate accommodations for identified students
24. Attends assigned divisional, department, and college meetings.
25. Reviews and modifies curriculum (for both ground and distance education courses).
26. Develops and implements a program of instruction that meets with shared department goals and objectives outline for the course.
27. Uses Blackboard regularly to augment instruction to include the uploading of the syllabus, homework assignments, supplemental videos, lecture presentations, handouts, assignments, materials and recorded lectures (where applicable).
28. Participates on committees and engages in college-wide activities to promote the missions of the institution.
29. Agrees to participate in required college events, such as, graduation, honors day programs, and other assigned events.
30. Maintains a neat, appropriate and professional appearance at all times.
31. Adheres to all school and/or department policies and responds to all administrative request in a timely professional manner.
32. Assists every student in the development of his/her academic abilities to his/her greatest capacity.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION, STANDARDS, AND TRAINING:  

  • Master’s degree or higher in Nursing from an accredited college or university
  • Three (3) years of successful full-time working experience as Registered Nurse
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience in nursing education (classroom/clinical) or 10 years of full-time nursing experience may substitute for teaching experience in nursing education 
 
REQUIRED LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS, OR SPECIAL CREDENTIALS:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current unencumbered Alabama Nursing License
  •  Preference will be given to applicants with teaching and/or practice experience in Medical-Surgical and Maternal-Child Health. 
  • Certifications related to Medical-Surgical Nursing and/or Maternal-Child Health is preferred. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Must be computer literate and versed in instructional technology platforms

Sick Leave
All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions.  Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control.   The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA.  The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy.  The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
