Job Description:

Function of Position:

 

The Associate Vice President (AVP), Student Development, reports directly to the Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs and will focus on the day-to-day operations relating to the seamless delivery of student supports, including but not limited to student leadership development, student rights and responsibilities, athletics, and health and wellness.

 

The AVP, Student Development, will serve as the College ombudsperson, reviewing, responding, and documenting student concerns and complaints, and is responsible for the overall administration and oversight of planning, coordination, and implementation of programs, services, and communications which are designed to assist and support students in achieving academic and personal success.

 

Under the direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, in conjunction with the AVP, Enrollment Management, and the AVP, Student Success and Strategic Initiatives, this position will provide strategic leadership and support in research, coordination, planning, and implementation of new and ongoing initiatives that enhance support services, including those that address non-academic issues. In partnership with the members of the Academic and Student Affairs Leadership Council, this position is responsible to prepare and provide data, data-driven recommendations, and statistical analysis that assist the Division in understanding student needs and leads the development, implementation, and assessment of student success and retention efforts.

 

The AVP, Student Development, is responsible for supporting an environment that promotes student success, and adapts to emerging issues, trends, and community needs.  This position champions diversity, equity, and belonging through continuous professional learning and exemplary inclusive practices to strengthen a culture of belonging.

 

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

 

Primary Functions:

  • Lead the Student Development unit in the implementation of student support services designed to address student retention, persistence, and completion.
  • Lead assessment efforts to ensure achievement of student success goals and outcomes, and work in partnership across the institution to collect and report relevant data, ensuring that assessment of all enrollment initiatives and services occurs annually, and assist individual departments in setting measurable goals and plans for continuous improvement.
  • Recommend and implement goals, College policies, and initiatives relevant to student support and development, and engage in ongoing benchmarking of best practices to ensure the delivery and assessment of strong, evidence-based student services and programs.
  • Ensure that focus and accountability is placed on initiatives that promote quality student outcomes as indicated by successful student progression, satisfaction, and completion.
  • Serve as a liaison to Student Government Association
  • Promote a culture of institutional effectiveness through assessment of unit activities.
  • Lead, coordinate, or support programs, budgets, and administrative initiatives.
  • Provide primary leadership in guiding, planning, implementing, evaluating, and modifying administrative processes and operational procedures related to assigned departments.
  • Foster partnerships with colleges and schools to develop retention, persistence, graduation, and employability plans for undergraduate students.
  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and supervision for the following areas, including but not exclusive to: Student Life and Leadership Development, Student Rights and Responsibilities, Athletics, Student Government Association, Health and Wellness.
  • Investigate, address, and resolve problems, grievances, and complaints related to area of responsibility.
  • Develop, interpret, and manage adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Exercise budget authority and administrative approvals.
  • Work collaboratively with the campus community?faculty, staff, and students?to create a culture of student engagement and success.
  • Serve on various committees, task force groups, and general planning functions as requested by the faculty or as appointed by the Provost and Vice President, Academic and Students Affairs or the President of the College.
  • Direct essential aspects of the Division's efforts to support the College's overall mission, strategic plan, and goals. 

 

Secondary Functions:

  • Work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues and staff across the College in service of the College's vision, mission, and strategic goals.
  • Represent the College in local and state forums.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned master's degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive administrative experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience leading student diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Documented ability to integrate data into decision-making to promote effective practices and policies.
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate partnerships and to work with diverse groups of faculty, students, and staff on complex issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational leadership with excellent management, human relations, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of student development theory and current trends in academic and student success strategies in higher education.
  • Evidence of successful budget management and oversight
  • Demonstrated experience in setting goals and assessing outcomes.
  • Evidence of strong technical/computer skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate degree from a regionally accredited higher education institution.
  • Evidence of commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college.
  • Documented experience in working with community, governmental, and other public sector agencies.
  • Proven success working collaboratively with co-curricular learning experiences and within the development of institutional partnerships focused on improving student success. Proven ability to listen to a variety of constituent groups and synthesize input, make decisions, and share information broadly to build consensus and support for action.

  • Paid Holidays: 9 paid holidays, plus December 24 when it occurs M - Th and the weekdays through the end of the year

MCC is currently testing a Pilot Telecommuting Program that runs from October 25th, 2021 to June 30th, 2023. Under the pilot program, this position may be eligible for remote work up to 5 days per pay period pending departmental need and leadership approval. The pilot program may be extended or terminated at any time at the College's discretion.
