Description

We seek applicants for a full-time Public Safety Officer and Public Safety Shift Supervisor position to provide safety and security services on Heartland Community College properties. Public Safety employees create a welcoming campus environment and build constructive relationships with those they serve, with a focus on de-escalation and achieving voluntary compliance before needing to take official action in enforcing College rules and regulations. These are non-sworn, uniformed positions that will serve the campus through desk duties, foot and mobile patrol, and monitoring of electronic security systems. Positions require availability to work varying shift assignments including day, evening, midnight, weekend, and holiday hours.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Perform foot patrol of campus buildings and properties and vehicular patrol of the main campus and off-campus properties
  • Staff the Public Safety Desk, assisting students, employees, and other community members and monitoring surveillance systems
  • Lock, unlock, and ensure general security to campus buildings and rooms
  • Investigate incidents and document according to established procedures
  • Provide first aid, CPR, and AED services to persons experiencing medical distress
  • Supervise, train, guide activities, and conduct performance evaluations of Public Safety Officers on assigned shift (Shift Supervisor only)


Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 19+ years old (Public Safety Officer)
  • 21+ years old (Shift Supervisor)
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively and inclusively within a diverse campus community
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and focus on de-escalation during response to safety and security incidences
  • Ability to read, interpret, and properly apply established policies and procedures
  • Effective computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to use software specific to the position
  • Availability to work varying shift assignments including day, evening, midnight, weekend, and holiday responsibilities
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screenings which may include but are not limited to physical examination/fitness testing and criminal background check
Certifications in the following areas or ability to acquire within 6 months of employment (training provided)
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications
  • FEMA ICS-100 and Hazardous Materials Awareness certificates
  • Public Safety Officer training as required by statute
Physical Abilities
  • Walk and/or stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move objects weighing up to 20 lbs.
  • Run 50 yards and climb stairs while carrying an AED and/or First Aid kit
  • Assist evacuation of non-ambulatory persons
  • Ability to work in conditions that may include exposure to extreme weather, intense physical activity, interaction with agitated individuals, those with contagious diseases, and various safety hazards

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate degree (Public Safety Officer)
  • Bachelor’s degree (Shift Supervisor)
  • Successful experience as a first responder

EMPLOYEE LEAVE
Vacation: 10 days per year with a maximum annual carry-over of 20 days
(In an effort to recognize length of service, these employees will receive additional vacation hours after a certain number of years of service.) 
Sick Leave: 12 days per year with unlimited annual carry-over
Holidays: 12 designated paid holidays plus 3 paid floating days
HCC is closed from Christmas Eve Day through New Year's Day generally resulting in 2-3 additional paid days
