Job Description

SENIOR TECHNICIAN MECHANICAL, Mechanical Engineering (MechE), to help design and build molds, jigs, and other tooling to fabricate discovery hardware and build hardware itself.  In the first year, typical build quantities will be ten copies of a given piece of hardware for use at MIT. In the second year, manufacturing is expected to increase in quantity so that guided discovery hardware may be provided to other colleges and universities and possibly to high schools.  In this case, the senior technician will work with outside vendors to accommodate the increased production rate.  Will perform related duties as required.  The position offers access to a very complete machine shop within the same building as the lab where guided discovery hardware is developed and that has staff who can provide training on the wide variety of equipment in the shop.  

Job Requirements
REQUIRED:  graduation from a two-year day technical school or its equivalent; at least five years of applicable experience; skill using manual machine tools; comfort working in small groups; ability to manage project timelines independently; and an interest in building hardware that is mechanical in nature.  Seek someone who enjoys and is willing to learn new skills, including laser and water-jet cutting machines, 3D printing machines, thermoforming/vacuum forming machines, casting of silicone rubber, CNC programming, etc.  PREFERRED:  familiarity with CNC tools.  Job #22663
