Position Summary

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher provides and coordinates services and instruction to special populations, such as the economically and educationally disadvantaged, and disabled, or those for whom English is a second language. This position will serve as the primary contact and provide instruction in English as a second language for all assigned students. Instruction is based on the individual needs of each participant. Willing and able to work with disadvantaged adults on the basic academic level.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides instruction in literacy, adult basic education, English language acquisition, family literacy, integrated English Literacy and civics education, integrated education and training, including career pathways, workplace education, and workforce preparation and employability skills integration. 
  2. Applies research-based instructional practices that incorporate the use of computers and other technologies. 
  3. Is knowledgeable of reading, writing, listening, and speaking instructional strategies. 
  4. Uses a variety of instructional strategies and tools appropriate to the needs of the student. 
  5. Uses lesson plans aligned with CCR Standards that integrate instruction across content areas. 
  6. Provides continuous feedback and adjusts instruction to maximize student learning. Works with colleagues to develop and evaluate curriculum and materials. 
  7. Integrates work-, family- and community-related activities into instruction. Administers and interprets appropriate placement and diagnostic tests. 
  8. Applies adult education principles and methods in the workforce classroom. 
  9. Facilitates the transfer of learned skills from the classroom to the job. 
  10. Plans learning experiences that are interactive and relevant to the specific workplace environment. 
  11. Customizes and develops workplace education curriculum and lesson plans that facilitate transference from the classroom to the job based on the workforce goals and expected training outcomes. 
  12. Plans instructional support activities carried out by academic assistants. 
  13. Evaluates the achievement of students with whom academic assistants are working. 
  14. Additional duties may include assisting AE students with enrolling in postsecondary education institutions or training programs; helping students with job search skills in preparation for the workforce; connecting students with support services; and helping students establish career and educational goals. 
  15. Attend local and state in-service meetings. 
  16. Comply with all policies of the Alabama Community College System and the College. 
  17. Perform other duties as assigned. 
  18. In order to perform these essential functions, the Instructor must be present at work. Therefore, attendance is an essential function. 
 
Work Sites: Wallace State Community College: Hanceville Campus and Oneonta Campus; Tyson Foods in Blount County; Topre in Cullman County
 Work Hours: 35 hours per week. Multiple campus locations.

Qualifications

  1. A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Teaching experience at the college level preferred.
  3. One year of teaching or tutoring experience and ESL certification (TESOL or TEFL) preferred.
  4. Must speak fluent Spanish.
  5. Experience in the use of a variety of instructional technologies, including distance learning technologies, preferred.

Appropriate placement on ACCS Salary Schedule D3 ($28,225-$56,450) of the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule. This position involves performance duties for a federally funded project and is contingent on continued federal funding.  In the event that funds for this position are discontinued or significantly reduced or if federal requirements for funding this project no longer include this position, the College shall have the right to discontinue the position. Neither tenure or non-probationary status may be attained in this position.

Sick Leave
All regular full-time instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is equivalent to 7 hours per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions.  Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control.   The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA.  The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy.  The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.  

Employees/Dependents at two-year colleges:
1/3 waived after 1st year
2/3 waived after 2nd year
3/3 waived after 3rd year
