DESCRIPTION

Mendocino-Lake Community College District is currently accepting applications for a Short- Term, Non-Continuing Instructional Aide - Biology. 

This is a temporary, non-continuing position.

Under the general direction of the Dean or designee, provides instructional support in the classroom and/or lab setting.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a Short-Term Non-Continuing (STNC), temporary, hourly position, 6-10 hours as needed with up to 60 hours during the semester, $19.78 per hour. Ed Code 88003 authorizes a governing board to hire STNC employees for less than 75% of a school year, up to 180 days.

Benefits: The College offers a Bronze level benefit plan at the cost of the employee.

Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn forty (40) hours of sick leave per fiscal year.  

Retirement: This position may be eligible for CalPERS Retirement (contingent upon number of hours worked within the fiscal year)

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The successful candidate will support student and institutional success by executing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides instructional support to students during class and/or lab time
  • Notifies students of additional services on campus; such as tutoring and other resources 
  • Assists faculty with material coordination and or/dispersion 
  • May assist with data entry 
  • May assist with set up of classroom materials and exhibits 
  • May assist students with computer usage or software
  • Other duties as assigned 
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist instructors during Microbiology and Physiology labs
  • Assist lab technicians with set-up and clean-up 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Classroom setting; subject to moderate noise; frequent interruptions; frequent social interactions. May lift up to 25 pounds. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including by not limited to a Live Scan background check, completion of TB, and work permit where required.

Education:
High School Diploma/GED required; AA preferred 

Have successfully completed Microbiology and Physiology labs or have a working knowledge of labs. 

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Specific curriculum and any equipment or tools, as appropriate to the classroom setting;
  • Basic teaching and learning principles, study skills, and customer service skills;  
  • Appropriate language skills including usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary;
  • Basic arithmetic;
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy

  • Aseptic technique
  • Light microscopy 
  • Instrumentation 
  • Excel for data analysis 
  • Pure culture 
  • Media preparation 
  • BSL1 & BSL2 PPE and working conditions 
  • BSL 2 requirements for human body fluids and pathogens  

ABILITY TO:

  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of stakeholders;
  • Follow verbal and written directions;

  • Walk and/or stand for intermittent periods;

  • Help students identify problems and recommend solutions

PHYSICAL ABILITY TO:

Physical demands include sitting, standing, reaching, bending, walking, driving, and frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs).

SELECTION PROCEDURE

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT(Prior to beginning employment)
