Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Nuclear Science Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

In this role, you will work in the Relativistic Nuclear Collisions (RNC) program in the Nuclear Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and work on the physics analysis and/or instrumentation aspects of high energy nuclear physics.

The RNC scientists play leading roles in both physics analysis and instrumentation in experiments such as STAR, ALICE, sPHENIX, and future EIC experiment(s).  RNC is leading the Beam Energy Scan (BES) phase-II physics analysis for STAR experiment and heavily involved in the sPHENIX MVTX project and the physics program. In the meantime, R&D work and physics development for future EIC experiments are underway.

What You Will Do:

• Contribute to RHIC physics program that includes STAR’s BES-II physics analyses or heavy flavor measurements at sPHENIX.

• Contribute to the experiments’ calibration and analysis service work.

• Contribute to instrumentation/physics development of future experiment projects.

• Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.

• Publish papers/reports in refereed journals, and make oral presentations of work.

• Report results to supervisor.

What is Required:

• Recent Ph.D. in Nuclear/High-Energy Physics or a related discipline within the last 3 years (excluding career interruptions).

• Experience with data analysis in high energy particle or nuclear experiments.

• Proficiency in written and oral dissemination of scientific results.

• Ability to work independently and in collaboration in a research environment.

Salary:

The monthly salary range for this position is $5,000 - $6,257 and is expected to start at $5,954 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

• This is a full-time, 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
