ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students,  students learning English, and Continuing Education students. PURPOSE OF POSITION:

This Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2 position coordinates and provides laboratory support to undergraduate courses in one or more of the following lab sciences: Anatomy & Physiology, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Oceanography, and Physics.
 
This position reports to the Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 4.
 
This is an eleven-month, forty-hour per week, cyclic position, with four unpaid weeks off from August 16 - September 15. Hours of work will be primarily 8 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.
 
Schedule may vary to meet laboratory and campus needs.



Position Responsibilities

Instructional Support
 
  • Adhere to procedures and guidelines established by the college 
  • Assist instructors with planning laboratory assignments and schedules 
  • Maintain organized records of lab schedules and prep material requirements 
  • Estimate quantity of supplies and materials needed; maintain adequate stock levels 
  • Prepare laboratory equipment, materials, and solutions in compliance with safety policies and procedures 
  • Put away/dispose of materials and chemicals used in lab experiments after labs have been completed 
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance and repairs on laboratory and demonstration instruments and equipment; instruct students, teaching assistants and faculty in the use of equipment 
  • Construct apparatus used in demonstrations 
  • Search literature to determine methods to improve laboratory techniques and the teaching of scientific principles to students 
  • Write, edit or modify laboratory handouts or manuals; modify experiments; advise instructors of potential problems with existing lab procedures 
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support student learning 
  • Determine appropriate disposal method for waste generated in laboratory experiments
  • May direct the work of others (e.g., hourly employee, student workers)
  • Participate in campus-wide events as directed
  • Participate in committees as appropriate
  • Perform other duties as required.
 
Lab Monitoring
 
  • Monitor laboratory areas to ensure compliance with safety policies
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Safety Manager or a college designee in developing safe laboratory procedures and practices

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Associate of Art's degree with major study in a scientific field; or a minimum of one year of experience as a scientific instructional technician, or equivalent education and experience
  • Ability to investigate/research external information resources to determine proper procedures and best laboratory practices
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical use, specimen preparation, laboratory media, culture and maintenance of organisms, sterilization and disposal of biological products, and maintenance and repair of equipment and models
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with fostering a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate, coordinate, and cooperate within a team setting

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree with major study in a scientific field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Experience working in higher education
  • Prior responsibility for technician support of a college level science course
  • Specific experience in support of science laboratory curriculum
  • Student focused: Searches out ways to enhance student learning by improving laboratory experience. 
  • Actively acquires new skills and competencies; accepts personal responsibility to develop talents and knowledge

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

  • Standing and moving about the prep room and labs
  • Handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals using personal protective equipment and applicable safety procedures.
  • Frequent repetitive arm, hand, and finger motions
  • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screen in performing work assignments
  • Work in a setting with frequent interruptions
  • May need to carry, lift or move equipment/supplies up to 50 lbs.
  • Regular Work schedule: 8:00am to 4:00 pm Monday-Friday with four unpaid weeks off from August 16- September 15. Schedule may vary to meet laboratory and campus needs.
