Position Overview

Essential Job Duties
North Carolina State University-College of Veterinary Medicine will be offering a one year small animal surgical internship beginning in July 2024. Candidates must have completed a small animal rotating internship.

Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical duties will be directly supervised by boarded faculty. The intern will assist with and in some cases assume primary case management responsibility while on the small animal soft tissue and orthopedic services and will be expected to participate in the supervision and instruction of general small animal rotating interns and senior veterinary students.

Formal course work is not included in the program, however the candidate will be required to attend journal club and board preparation rounds and present at house officer rounds. The candidate will assist with a wide variety of soft tissue and orthopedic cases with increasing operative responsibilities as indicated by the individual’s progress in the program. Laboratory instruction of second and third year veterinary students (6-8 half day spay/neuter labs) is expected. The candidate is encouraged to get involved with a research project during the internship. This program is ideal for applicants that have already completed a small animal rotating internship that are interested in pursuing advanced training in surgery prior to applying to a surgical residency program.

A North Carolina license can be obtained after arrival through our institutional employment licensing agreement at no cost to the intern. Professional liability insurance is furnished with the program. A certificate will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the program. Applicants to this program should submit three letters of recommendation from clinicians (preferably board certified) with whom he/she has worked and who can attest to the clinical proficiency of the applicant. It is anticipated that the candidate will have an interest in pursuing a residency in small animal surgery. Factors favoring selection of the applicant include letters of recommendation that indicate superior clinical skills, a strong academic record (e.g. GPA >3.5) and a record of activities demonstrating good leadership and interpersonal skills, and eligible to work in the United States.
