Position Information

Position Overview

Essential Job Duties
The dentistry and oral surgery residency is a 3 year, full-time program. It is designed to provide training and increase knowledge of and experience in the discipline of dentistry and oral surgery through exposure to clinical dentistry and oral/maxillofacial medicine and surgery, research related to these disciplines, and teaching.

This position is a Thrive-sponsored residency at North Carolina State University. At the completion of the residency, Thrive-sponsored residents agree to a term of four years commitment to a hospital within the Thrive network. Contact houseofficerprograms@thrivepet.com with any questions regarding funding and post-training commitment to Thrive.

Thrive-sponsored resident applicants must have a current United States work authorization for the 4-year post-residency commitment prior to starting the residency.

The residency program includes training in all major aspects of dentistry: oral anatomy, oral pathology, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, restorative dentistry,oral/maxillofacial surgery and oral diagnostic imaging (intraoral radiography, cone beam computed tomography and conventional computed tomography). The species emphasis of the program is on dogs and cats, although other species may be included.

This training program is approved by the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC), and residents entering the program will register with the AVDC and are expected to submit the reports required to maintain their AVDC eligibility.

Duties and Responsibilities
The resident’s schedule is structured so that all requirements for a successful application for membership to the AVDC can be completed and submitted by the resident after 2.5years. This allows the second half of the third year of the residency to include time for preparation for the
AVDC examination and time for completion of research or clinical investigation project(s), plus clinical time for a more independent chief resident service.

The proposed schedule for the first year is itemized below:
  • 44 weeks on clinics
  • 8 weeks off-clinic time (including project work, holidays and vacation weeks): can be taken in daily or weekly increments throughout the length of the proposed arrangement as agreed upon with the Residency Program Director.

Admission into the second and third years of the program and issuance of the certificate of residency training are dependent upon satisfactory evaluation of the resident’s performance as determined by the Residency Program Director.
