Position Summary

The Police Officer promotes and maintains civil order; enforces laws and ordinances;  conducts investigations; issues citations and makes arrests; patrols assigned areas to provide security; responds to alarm calls; prepares detailed reports concerning crimes and incidents; interviews victims and witnesses; maintains equipment in functional condition; establishes and maintains positive working relationships with the college community and community-at-large. Performs additional duties as required.

Salary Schedule: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule E4 05 based on experience ($33,625-$50,777).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  Patrols the college campuses and makes scheduled tours of buildings and grounds, by vehicle or on foot to ensure buildings and persons are secure.
  2. Monitors events on campus to ensure security and safety for the students, participants, and attendees. 
  3. Responds to and investigates incidents on campus, including but not limited to, motor vehicle incidents, or criminal or college violations as assigned.
  4. Enforces criminal and traffic laws; make arrests and issues summons as required.
  5. Locks and unlocks outer doors, checks buildings and hallways, after hours for signs of unusual activity. 
  6. Issues tickets to violators of campus parking regulations. 
  7. Monitors students and visitors to ensure compliance with college policies and regulations. 
  8. Completes clear and concise written offense reports immediately following an incident.  
  9. Logs all activities in daily log register. 
  10. Inspects all assigned areas for safety hazards. 
  11. Investigates all adverse campus conditions and situations. 
  12. Participates in training concerning various aspects of law enforcement; attends department briefings.
  13. Recertifies on firearms range annually. 
  14. Lifts, carries and moves heavy objects within safety limits. 
  15. Serves as relief dispatcher as may be required.
  16. Demonstrates physical fitness and agility.
  17. Serves on college committees as assigned. 
  18. Performs other work-related duties as assigned by appropriate personnel. 
  19. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
  20. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including day, evening, nights and weekends.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION, STANDARDS, AND TRAINING: 

  1. High school diploma or GED
  2. One year of full-time Law Enforcement work experience
  3. Knowledge of Federal, State and Local Statutes and Ordinances pertaining to law enforcement
  4. Community and problem-solving policing philosophies and principals
  5. Effective oral and written communication skills (ability to prepare concise and accurate reports)

 OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Basic computer skills
  2. Detail-orientated with an aptitude for problem-solving
  3. Ability to maintain confidentiality
  4. Ability to maintain self-control and take directions from supervisor
  5. Ability to perform physical activities necessary to protect oneself and others
  6. Ability to effectively use firearms and equipment associated with the work

 Sick Leave
All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Upon retirement, employees are allowed to convert unused sick time into service time for the purpose of retirement. Retirement
The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions.  Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control.   The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA.  The TRS is a defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. Tier I - Pays 7.50% monthly.  State matches 12.59% (effective 10/01/22)

Tuition Assistance
This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy.  The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.

  • 1/3 waived after 1st year
