General Summary | The Visual and Performing Arts Technical Director is responsible for orchestrating the seamless execution of all events, performances, productions, and exhibitions within the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. This position oversees equipment management, technical services, and ensures the highest production standards are met. The Technical Director will report to the Chair of the Visual and Performing Arts Department. |
Specific Position Duties | Provide comprehensive lighting and sound support for theatre, art, and music productions, guaranteeing optimal production quality. Coordinate technical requirements for all productions, including attending technical rehearsals and production meetings. Assist in the setup of theatre, art, and music productions, including recruiting, training, and assigning technical crew/volunteers for set construction and tech needs. Develop and maintain an equipment inventory, ensuring organization and functionality of theatre venues. Perform routine maintenance on equipment and systems, communicating and coordinating with the physical plant for venue requirements. Optionally teach technical theatre and theatre appreciation courses if academically credentialed. Facilitate non-theatre events in the Globe Theatre and related venues, providing support for external agencies and events. Orient facility renters and visiting productions to safety and technical characteristics of the venue. Assist in budget preparation and control for productions. Create and maintain daily operation schedules and production calendars for departmental productions. Collaborate with the art gallery director to schedule and set up visual arts events and exhibitions. Coordinate with department chair and music faculty to maintain music instruments and equipment, as well as inventory management of costumes and theatre equipment. Coordinate logistics for moving pianos and sound equipment as needed. |
Minimum Qualifications | Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre with extensive training in Technical Direction, Set Construction Techniques, Audio, and Lighting Design from a regionally accredited or internationally certified university. Proficiency in basic shop equipment operation (e.g., radial arm saw, table saw). Knowledge of OSHA health and safety standards for theatre practices and other exhibitions and performances. Familiarity with basic stage rigging and ability to translate designer elevations and models into hand or computer-aided drafting. Competence in rough and finish carpentry. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. |
Preferred Qualifications | Master’s degree and experience teaching technical theatre and theatre appreciation courses to traditional college and dual-credit students. |
