Job Description

ASSISTANT DEAN FOR DEVELOPMENT, School of Science, to advance the dean’s vision and create a comprehensive strategic plan to raise philanthropic support and awareness for the school’s six departments, labs, centers, and institutes.  Will devise cultivation plans and solicitation strategies to ensure sustainable growth in philanthropic contributions with the aim of surpassing the $175 million raised last fiscal year; collaborate with the dean, department heads, and faculty to articulate funding priorities and engage with key stakeholders within MIT Resource Development and potential donors; manage a team of two to three staff members while maintaining oversight of department- and center-based fundraisers; and cultivate relationships with individual and institutional prospects through donor visits, campus engagements, and proactive outreach efforts.  

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree; at least ten years of direct fundraising experience, preferably within a complex institution of higher education; excellent communication skills for conveying the school’s mission and vision persuasively to diverse funding organizations; ability to understand and translate academic, technical, and research information for all audiences; and excellent interpersonal skills for operating effectively, flexibly, and collegially in a complex organizational environment.  Seek a self-motivated, collaborative individual with demonstrated success in philanthropy within a complex academic setting who has a proven track record of raising major and principal gifts and enhancing the effectiveness of development programs. PREFERRED:  advanced degree, a background in science, and a desire to advance scientific research and education.  Job #23836-13
