Summary of Purpose

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, functions as a coordinator in the following program areas: recruitment, employee engagement, human resource planning and policy development, labor and employee relations, staff training and development, and human resources technology and data. This individual must be comfortable working in a multi-cultural, diverse working environment.

  Note: This position is a hybrid role which requires the person to work in the office two days  a week, or more as required.

Typical Duties

This description is intended to indicate the types of duties and responsibilities requested of the employee assigned this title.  It is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the duties and responsibilities that may be required: 
 

  1. Recruits, interviews and facilitates the hiring process; collaborates with hiring managers on the application review and interview process to select qualified applicants. 
  2. Partners with assigned College departments and/or campus/work site locations, providing coordination and consultation in the areas of recruitment, employee engagement, human resource planning and policy development, labor and employee relations, organizational development, and staff training and employee professional development activities.
  3. Participates in the planning and implementation of employee engagement strategies and activities to help build and promote a culture of collaboration and inclusiveness across the College. 
  4. Supports the Employee Relations Manager as needed with employee relations investigations, policy updates, grievances, labor negotiations, arbitration preparation, alleged policy violations, and resolving conflict in the workplace. 
  5.  Facilitates and coordinates the New Employee orientation; partners with hiring managers and supports functions to ensure a successful onboarding experience for new employees.
  6. Produces reports on recruitment and retention metrics to provide insights on workforce trends and opportunities and solutions to enhance the employee experience.
  7. Participates in and supports the colleges Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice initiatives, activities, and events.
  8. Assists with the implementation and evaluation of employee professional development.
  9. Assists in the development of human resources standard operating procedures.
  10. Assists in ensuring compliance with applicable laws, collective bargaining agreements, policies, and procedures. 
  11. Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Knowledge of current federal, state, and local employment laws and fair employment practices. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with people at all levels of the College. 
  • Ability to promote a positive and inclusive culture, while establishing trust and credibility across the College.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to advise and guide leaders on resolving workplace challenges and to support employee performance management. 
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate human resources and labor relations data and other related information to prepare reports and recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise confidentiality and professionalism in everyday work duties. 
  • Ability to exercise judgement and initiative in analyzing problems and recommending solutions. 
  • Knowledge of human resources information systems, programs and databases i.e. applicant tracking systems, employee data systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, Excel, TEAMS, Zoom, and other HRIS systems, as required.
  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and an operable insured automobile for authorized travel.

Minimum Education and Experience

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Labor/Industrial Relations, Public Administration, Organizational Development or a directly related field from an accredited college or university.
 
EXPERIENCE:  A minimum of two (2) years of professional human resources experience in any combination of the following: recruitment, employee engagement, human resource planning and policy development, HRIS and employee data systems, labor relations, employee relations, organizational development, or staff training and employee professional development and/or  a related field.  Working in Union Environment is a plus.
