Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Academic Advisor/Career Coach is responsible for the recruitment, advisement, and retention of current and potential Laredo College students. The Academic Advisor/Career Coach is responsible for providing current and prospective students with information regarding admissions, testing, financial aid, scholarships, registration, educational programs, course planning, career services, and the LC student support services through presentations and personal interviews with students in various settings throughout the community and the college service delivery area. The Academic Advisor/Career Coach also provides information to area high school counselors about LC, federal and state programs, procedures, and opportunities available to college bound students. The Academic Advisor/Career Coach develops, implements, and evaluates programs and presentations to deliver the above?mentioned students services

 Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides academic advisement for new and continuing college students, including those in transfer and technical degree and certificate programs.
  2. Provides career advising for students including career exploration, job databases and search navigation, and transition assistance through the career development process.
  3. Helps to coordinate the production and dissemination of marketing materials. Assists in the development, coordination, and implementation of recruitment activities for Laredo College/LEAPS POWER Grant.
  4. Involved in the decision?making process in relation to sensitive or confidential issues. 
  5. Leads the retention strategies of the college by properly advising prospective graduates. 
  6. Makes students aware of campus and community resources, including electronic student services. 
  7. Provides information on study skills and other college success strategies. 
  8. Provides career advisement, helping students make decision on college majors and career opportunities.
  9. Refers students to print and web?based resources related to career information.
  10. Collaborates with college employees in the Academic Advising and Student Success Center. 
  11. Works collaboratively with the Data Effectiveness Coordinator to ensure day to day implementation and activities of the LEAPS POWER grant. 
  12. Works collegially and cooperatively with others to accomplish grant goals and objectives. 
  13. Coordinates career?related workshops and seminars, and advising training sessions. 
  14. Provides time and effort monthly reports to Project Director and attends meetings and trainings. 
  15. Provides educational advisement services for students which may include course selection, grade requirements, tutorial services, and career planning. 
  16. Participates in special events and community activities that support LC’s implementation of the LEAPS POWER Grant. Prepares and delivers literature and presentations to potential students and parents in various settings in the community. 
  17. Possess thorough knowledge of LC student support services. Assists in the development and implementation of campus? wide retention/ LEAPS POWER grant efforts. 
  18. Work cooperatively with faculty and student services personnel in efforts to retain students and facilitate completion of degree and/or certificates. 
  19. Assists in the development and implementation of assessment instruments for the evaluation and improvement of student recruitment, advising, and retention. 
  20. Complies and utilizes data that supports communication with students and aids in the development and implementation of student recruitment, advising, and retention strategies and activities. 
  21. Works directly with Project Director to help plan, coordinate, and perform all required activities assigned for the LEAPS POWER grant. 
  22. Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Project Director, Associate Vice President of Student Services and Support Services and Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment.

 Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.
  • Two years in academic advising/counseling and working with Hispanic students and first-generation college students. 
  • Must have experience in recruitment, admissions, retention, registration, TSI placement, financial aid and knowledge in student support services.
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.

  • Strong organization, communication and writing skills (Spanish/English)
  • Skilled in human relations
  • Knowledge of the socio-economic conditions and ethics culture of the student body
  • Demonstrate skills in planning, organizing and implementing innovative programs relating to retention and recruitment
  • Ability to make group presentations and communicate well and relate to students, parents and staff
  • Be able to give presentations in English and Spanish
  • Strong computer word processing skills and knowledge in current computer software/technology preferably in Degree Pal, web-based tools, database, and advisor trac or tutor trac
  • Be able to work nights, weekends, and overtime
