Position Summary

The Marketing & Communications Department is recruiting for a full time Public Relations & Social Media Specialist. This position is responsible for planning and executing a comprehensive public relations and social media strategy that advances the College’s mission and goals.

Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Produces engaging content that builds meaningful connections and encourages engagement among campus and community constituents
  2. Plans, develops, edits, and publishes original, branded content across multiple digital and social media platforms
  3. Develops story ideas, collects information and writes, edits, and distributes news releases, internal communication pieces, and other public relations materials
  4. Writes strategic, creative, clean, and clear copy for webpages and social media
  5. Maintains an editorial calendar and publishes content according to schedule
  6. Attends campus events and interacts with students, employees, and the public to generate relevant, timely PR content
  7. Takes quality photos and videos for College publications and digital communications
  8. Schedules and coordinates internal and external photography and video services for public relations-related activities
  9. Monitors all College-recognized social media accounts and provides guidance, training, and assistance to College social media administrators
  10. Plans and executes paid digital advertising and social media campaigns
  11. Develops and maintains relationships with traditional and nontraditional media contacts
  12. Manages media requests in a timely and professional manner
  13. Manages projects and tracks progress using a project management software in coordination with other team members
  14. Provides communications and related support as requested, such as drafting talking points, scripts, or speeches
  15. Assists with College events, press conferences, meetings, and public appearances
  16. Stays up-to-date with current and emerging technologies and trends in social media, design tools, and applications
  17. Participates in various marketing initiatives, including advertising campaigns, brand positioning, and event coordination
  18. Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field required
  • 2 years of related experience in social media management, marketing, communications, or public relations preferred
  • Experience using social media publishing, management, and content creation tools
  • Ability to tell compelling stories through text, emojis, photos, and videos
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and implementation skills, including ability to meet deadlines, attend to detail, and multi-task
  • Ability to think critically and research, understand, and explain programs, services, reports, statistical data, policies, and procedures clearly and concisely
  • Friendly, courteous manner when greeting and assisting internal clients 
  • Ability to work independently and on a team
  • Microsoft Office experience (especially Word and Outlook)
  • Ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and perform multiple tasks and prioritize
  • Must be flexible and able to respond to opportunities swiftly
  • Ability to work hours beyond the typical business day, when necessary
  • Familiarity with content management systems and project management systems preferred

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle controls, key pads, etc. Will be required to sit and reach with hands and arms as well as, sit, stand, walk, push, pull, bend and stoop while lifting boxes of files and displays. The employee will seldom lift and/or move up to 30 pounds while loading office supplies, displays and paper. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, some color vision, and the ability to adjust focus from documents to computer screen. Hearing of light to moderate sound is required by this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The following benefits apply to all full-time positions scheduled to work 30 hours or more each week.  These full-time positions are also eligible to participate in our TRS retirement plan.

Retirement
Participation in the Teacher Retirement System is mandatory (ORP option for eligible employees)
  • Currently, the employee contribution is 8.25%.  The state and Victoria College, together, contribute 8.25%
